Hey folks, Harry here with what I'll be calling the "FORRYs" Got this email and it made me smile, cuz I can think of no better title to give to the award of a fan film, other than the name of the biggest fan of them all... Forrest J Ackerman, creator of the word "Sci-Fi" and founder of Famous Monsters Of Filmland magazine - which is one of the founding building blocks of fandom. The only disappointment here is that they don't have a "Hall of Fame" award for Fan films of yesteryear. Well, here ya go...

Fan film awards
This year we are planning the First Annual Forrest J Ackerman Fan Film Awards. These will be awards for creators of fan films. These films don't receive any funding from the major motion picture studios. They are works of art by people who are fans of their subject matter. There are numerous fan films out now dealing with superheroes (like Batman Dead End, and Surge of Power), Star Wars (Troops, and George Lucas in Love), Star Trek the Further adventures, and many more. There are people making their own versions of movies and television shows like Aliens, The Matrix, Indiana Jones, and the X-Men. These films are made easier with the advent of the computer and the fact that semiprofessional video equipment is easily affordable these days.
We are planning on honoring films in the following fields:
Best Science Fiction
Best Fantasy
Best Horror
Best Comic Book Related
Best Series Inspired
Best Animated
Best Fannish Documentary (must be about fandom some way)
Best Science Fiction or Fantasy Music Video
We will be handing out awards in two categories. The first being Short Form, for films under 45 minutes in length and Long Form, for films over 45 minutes in length. We've already started receiving films that fit both categories. Forrest J Ackerman will be here to hand out the awards. This is a juried competition. The deadline for submissions is September 1, 2005.
The awards will be handed out at a banquet during Astronomicon 9, Rochester's science fiction and fantasy convention in Rochester New York. November 11-13, 2005.
