SXSW: Monki & Edison tackle CAVITE and lust after Sarah Silverman's JESUS IS MAGIC!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with Monki and his freaky hunchbacked midget sidekick, Edison. In this report from their Day 2 of SXSW Adventures. Luckily, they didn't copycat me all day, so I saw different films than they did so we won't quite double up like we did yesterday. Below you'll find two souls bared for the masses... It's very beautiful, but I think Sarah Silverman will need to get some big bodyguards. I mean, I think she's cute and hot and funny and super awesome and cool and I'd like to be her boyfriend, but these guys are just plain creepy. hehe

Seriously, though... It's lucky for them I have a very pretty girlfriend, so I don't feel the need to be the dominant greyback and beat the little Monki into submission in order to flash my mating dance at Sarah Silverman. My mating dance is something glorious to behold, but alas... I am spoken for. Enjoy the reviews!

Monki here again with Edison and my review of the second day here at SXSW.  We started off early with a panel of some of the funniest people I’ve ever had the good fortune to see in person.  Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt, Michael Blieden, Thomas Hayden Church and Paul Provenza were in perhaps the best panel in the history of SXSW.  Church’s reactions to talk of felching were quite hilarious and Oswald is as funny in person as he is on TV.  Can’t wait to see The Comedians of Comedy tomorrow.

The first film of the day we caught was Cavite.  I give major props to this film for the effort the two guys put into it.  Neil Dela Llana and Ian Gamazon put their heart and souls into this interesting piece about a man who travels to the Philippines only to find out his mother and sister are being held captive by a terrorist group.  The main character is then forced to obey the instructions of a mysterious man on the other end of a cell phone in order to keep his mom and sister alive.

I really like the idea behind this film and the work that went into making it.  The notion that two guys can produce a quality movie with zero budget is pretty cool.  That being said, I didn’t particularly enjoy the film.  Not a lot happens really aside from a lot of walking around the Philippines and a vicious cock fight.  From what I hear, a lot of distributors were in attendance tonight during the screening, and I hope this movie does get picked up for the sake of the hard work Ian and Neil put into it.

Then after a dinner break I caught Jesus is Magic.

I will do my best to not to turn this into a blatant open love letter to Sarah Silverman but more than likely that is what is going to happen.

I love Sarah Silverman.  Jesus is Magic was a great comedy film with some hilarious songs and skits.  Sarah has a mouth on her that would make a sailor blush too.  Seeing her decked out in some hot outfits incited quite a bit of drool to fall from my mouth as well.  Edison was not pleased with that, but something about seeing Sarah sweaty and yelling “F*** my tuchus!!” while being pounded from behind just did it for me.

If you enjoy beautiful women telling amazingly hilarious jokes, go see this movie.  Its showing twice more during SXSW and I highly recommend it.  Sarah, Harry has my email and phone number if you want it.

To wrap up the night we went to the Hooligans after-party.  Unfortunately we didn’t make it into the screening of Hooligans, but that wasn’t going to stop me from free alcohol.  It was pretty cool, and I got the opportunity to scare Elijah Wood, which was nice.  All in all, it was a good day, beautiful sky, great movies, Sarah Silverman, and free alcohol.  I love SXSW.

======================

Hello, I’m Edison. You’re welcome for the light bulb. And for movies. But now, on to the beauty of SXSW Day II. We started the day at the panel, and what a great choice that was. An incredibly fun, funny and engaging time despite the fact that a camera guy set up literally one foot in front of my face, obstructing my view the whole time. No hard feelings, guy, you were doing your job. Salute. Here are the reviews, short and sweet. I don’t waste time with a synopsis, and I make no claims that you will understand my scoring system.

Cavite is ambitious and bold. I have great respect and admiration for what Ian and Neill pulled off with this film, true guerilla film making. What really stands out about this movie to me is the grittiness, the feeling that they were going to make this film by any means necessary – at times, acting as the actor and the camera operator simultaneously… and getting good shots. There were some gaps here and there with the audience left guessing on why Adam is being singled out and how his every move is seen. Creepy. Oh, and Michael Jackson would really love the Philippines. When he gets acquitted, look for him to move there.

Jesus Is Magic. I knew that I would enjoy this because I like Sarah’s sense of humor and delivery, and as we used to say at University, she’s easy on the eyes. But this was surprising. I had no idea she was this musical, both literally and figuratively. And when she performs a “solo-trio” at the film’s end, well, it’s really a showstopper. The comedy is fresh and funny, no filler, and it’s brilliantly segmented by filmed pieces with Posehn and Odenkirk, and full blown musical numbers that put Sarah in a variety of outfits that could make your mind wander if you’re not careful. Seeing her singing songwriting chops make me hopeful that she’ll be somehow involved in the upcoming Tenacious D movie.

Looking forward to tomorrow. What else can you say, but “Johnny Cash”?
