A Long Time Listener shares his/her reactions to an early screening of Keitel's "Graceland". Thiss flick seems to have been in the can a long, long time. I hope it's worth the wait.
A first time caller, long time listener. I happened to catch a preview screening of "Road to Graceland" way back in Fall '97 in beautiful Santa Barbara, CA. In fact, I'd kinda been wondering what happened to this film. Well, looks like it's still being worked on.
The film I saw looked near completion at the time. It was editted well enough, but I don't recall any open titles or closing credits. The movie basically follows a young man (played by Johnathon Schaech, apparently) driving across the nation to reconcile a personal loss on his part. On the way, he picks up Keitel, who claims to be Elvis, and so starts the journey...
My impressions of the film? Well, take a movie that's "ok" and give it an extra notch for performances. Keitel was cool as always, though I don't think he looks much like an "old Elvis." Fonda was good, but only when NOT playing Monroe (her impersonation had me cringing). And Schaech turns in a solid perfomance as a man trying to come to grips with his loss. The ending came about as expected and the only real mystery is whether Keitel's Elvis is REALLY Elvis...
Unfortunately, it's been a while since I screened the film, so I can't remember all the details. I can only offer my impressions of what I saw. Hope it's useful. Keep up the good work, man...
