Hey folks, Harry here... I tend to hate just the list of who won what... I like folks impressions of the awards themselves, that's why I dig Bobby's report here on watching the BAFTAS. Here's all the winners Here ya go, if you like the geek coverage...
Hey Harry, how's it hanging? (The leg, Harry, the leg).
Just been watching the BAFTAS - or British Oscars - on BBC. They were actually staged where such movie award shows should be staged - in a movie theater, the huge Odeon in Leicester Square.
And, dammit, poor Marty Scorsese - who's gonna lose to Clint on Oscar night (also dammit) - can't even score in London. Mike Leigh was visually greatly shocked to be named Best Director for VERA DRAKE, a film that has so much wrong with it, damned difficult to know where to begin the list. Richard Gere announced AVIATOR as Best Film, though. That really sucks. How the fuck can you have a Best Film without its maker being Best Director? You can't have one without the other, doesn't make sense.
Jamie outfoxxed Leo in the acting nods. Presenter Helen Mirren (also the wife of RAY's director Taylor Hackford) took Jamie's trophy for him, as he was too busy "driving around LA at gun point."
Being nominated twice (for ETERNAL SUNSHINE and FINDING NEVERLAND) divided her vote meaning that the absent Kate Winslett lost Best Actress to, who else, but Imelda Staunton for eternally chirping on about making "a cuppa tea" as the little saint otherwise known as VERA DRAKE.
Support trophies, just as obviously, went to the divine Cate (as the divine Kate) in AVIATOR and Clive Owen for CLOSER. After all the rumors about CASINO ROYALE, I have to report that Owen finally looked a credible James Bond in his (old) tuxedo. He's thinner, sharper, sprucer and less, well, swarthy than he appeared in KING ARTHUR and CLOSER.
And it was something of an 007 evening as the final award, The British Film and Television Academy's Fellowship went to Bond (and, hey, so many other films') composer John Barry - while the classiest act among the presenters was Brosnan, Pierce Brosnan. (How could Eon think of dropping him?).
Hollywoodians working on the show included Gere, Keanu, Goldie, Christian Slater, Juliette Lewis. Presenting Barry with his fellowship, BORN FREE star Virgina McKenna still radiated that terrific British kind of beauty at an ageless 74 and HARRY POTTER's Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson is, glory be, beginning to sprout in all the right places at 15.
Best looking celebs, without doubt, ALFIE's Sienna Miller and HUSTLE's Adrian Lester (picking up the special effects trophy for THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW; you could say he was one of those SFX). Any producers who fail to team up Sienna and Adrian in some steamy love story - or forget to book her to slide up against whoever the hell the next Jimmy Bond is - will not deserve anything this time next year. (Lester would make a pretty nifty Bond, himself).
Also stuck with two nominations - for LES CHORISTES and A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT - France struck out in Best Foreign Film. The winner was, quite rightly, Walter Salles' MOTOR CYCLE DIARIES. And the whole team were there yelling 'n' hugging one another. And again when the film collected Best Music. Their faces fell when DIARIES lost Adapted Script to - way to go! - SIDEWAYS.
Charlie Kaufman gave up trying to make a speech, he was too moved and simply strolled off the stage after winning Best Original Script for ETERNAL SUNSHINE.
Forget most of the rest , too busy laughing at the jokes and trying to note them in a readable scrawl.
Here goes...
You're about to have Chris rocking the Oscars. We had the seemingly effortless wit of Stephen Fry. He call Brosnan "more shiney than my shoes, more outstanding than my fee." He said that Daniel Craig's face "has been designated as a state of natural beauty, which means you should sit on it... and have a picnic..."
His biggest laugh was his first, when he reminded us that the show was coming direct from "the heart of our litter-filled West End. [Pause]. I'm sorry that should be glitter-filled... the 'g' was missing as in: Arnold Schwarzenegger is a bit ropey."
You can still call me Bobby Dupea. I won't mind.
