SUNDANCE: Is BRICK This Year

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

That’s what this reviewer suggests...

‘Brick’

I came out to Sundance on a wing, a prayer, and two loafs of bread for my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Sunday morning after a burn out weekend of watching so-called ‘cutting edge’ films, my friend Greg and I decided to see the film Brick. Everyone in our Park City rental house was talking about the new (Donnie Darkoesque) ‘it’ movie, the must see of the festival. My friend Steve said, "It’s got the most incredible words, you gotta see it." What my friend Steve meant was that the film has sensationally witty dialogue. The characters say the darnest things, they talk in 1950's film noir monologue style. I was so sucked in that I didn't want to miss even a whisper. From the quirky set design to the unpredictable characters in every scene, I was captivated.

In the movie, Brendan's (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) ex-girlfriend gets involved in some major drug trouble. This leads Brendan into an action detective case/murder mystery centered around a high school campus, but not just any ordinary school??? I can't say too much because I don't want to give anything away, but I just think this is one fascinating film. The only thing more I'm going to say about it is, just wait until the drug dealers mom pours you some apple juice in a country glass -- hilarious! The movie is a high schoolers dream flick. What teenager doesn't secretly fantasize about being the main character in an elaborate Sherlock Holmes like detective scheme?

The greatest cult classics, in my opinion, force you to walk out of the film still talking. In fact, you could talk about this film for days...like I have. I'm still tripped up on the ending, and I love that. It's one of those movies where you just care about it. I found myself loving the characters I should hate, and maybe feeling a little too attached. Joseph Gordon-Levitt demands respect in this role. His character, Brendan, walks around with his head down, hands pressed tight in his pockets, kind of peculiar like, but I want to be him. He's living out a dream of every regular kid out there that just needs their moment to prove their point.

I'll say it one more time, this is a DETECTIVE story of the most elaborate kind, this movie is haunting, and most importantly, smart. I pray to God in Heaven that this movie gets distribution so I can see it again because this is one of those cult films I need to see at least twice...or ten times.

Thanks, man. It certainly seems to have made an impression on you, and I’m curious when the rest of us will be able to get a look at it.

"Moriarty" out.
