Doctor Vito wrote us the following report on his preview screening of "Blade", Marvel Comics' vampire hunting superhero. We've been hearing pretty good stuff about this vampire/action movie. The AICN crew here in Austin have "staked" out passes to see it Wednesday night and we're expecting to be glued to our seats til the end. One thing comic geeks, Stan Lee has said that if "Blade" makes good money then the X-Men movie is a sure bet to get the full go ahead for production. Just a little food for thought from ol Father Geek . Now to the good doctor's message, sent scratched on a blood stained mirror.
Just back from a sneak preview of Blade.(7:30 est showing, Monday) (I say sneak because the passes were given away at the local Sci-Fi/gaming store) I'm going to break it down, and try not to give away anything.
Story: For a vampire movie, good plot. Not to many things telegraphed, and not to many cheesy plot devices. Not an excessive amount of plot holes (but they sure are there). White Wolf's game Vampire has a lot of influence (but not direct stealing of ) is thoughout the film (particularly the background, the mythology I thought). I was totally amazed when someone next to me had not figured out who a character was, I had that the first 2 seconds of "It's" appearance about an hour before.
Acting: Good. Nothing spectacular. (Want more of the red-head from the opening minutes!!!!!!!!! )
Stuntwork: Quite Good!
Effects: Liked the camera work, and the fast-motion. Not many films do fast-motion well, and this does.
Design: OK
Editing: Quite Good.
Soundtrack: Good, but not outstanding. (Pi's sound track was better techno).
Fear of Sequels if this makes money: A Sure thing.
Running Time: Right around 2 hours.
Overall: If your a die hard vampire fan, go see it before your freinds do. If your a regular vampire fan: Go for the Twilight/Cheap showings.
Rating: 7 out of 10
