Will Robert Altman Get His Film Back?

The latest info on the Robert Altman/Polygram control over GINGERBREAD MAN came flying in via Baker the Candlestick Maker, who is a source from Island-Polygram.

You have all read about Robert Altman being forced out of the project due to bad test screening results, and the studio hiring an editor to cut the film the way they want it. Well according to Baker, his news could bode well for Bob--the Polygram recut, which was tested last Wednesday and was intended to take the place of Bob's cut if it scored better, performed no better than any of the prior cuts. Even though minutes (the Altman subtleties that his fans like) had been trimmed off the film, the scores were still abysmally low. Word has it that Polygram wants to stay with their cut, but since it scored the same one can only hope Altman will get his version back--he should, after all, since Island-Polygram would have used high scores against him had their version of the film scored better, and since they seem to depend so heavily on these scores. If I-P wants to save any more embarrassment, they'll give the cut back to him. Everything is up in the air until Altman & I-P resolve these issues, but the October 3 release is definitely pushed back.
