Hey folks, Harry here. Earlier this year I bought at auction, George Pal's original director's chair and script bag that he directed from for a great deal of his theatrical career... including his time helming the original WAR OF THE WORLDS. An absolute masterpiece of science fiction filmmaking.
I have often felt that early Speilberg was a heavily influenced by George Pal filmmaker. His love of ordinary people hit with the extraordinary. There was another trait that Steven shared with George and that was a genuine love and affection for all of his characters. Good, Evil... you could feel his breathless love for them all. The story by Spielberg films, AMAZING STORIES, the producing titles... Well, for a long time, Steven has been in what I have felt was a rather unfortunate case of "highbrow fever." Now... With WAR OF THE WORLDS - it seems that not only is he getting to make a film directly at the heart of where he came from... but one with a sheer love of the era he came from that I'm giddy about.
You've seen the WAR OF THE WORLDS poster? In many ways, it is just an inverted photorealistic version of George Pal's more impressionistic original. This teaser... directly quoting Wells' great novel... the comforting shots... and then that uncomfortable glow just over the horizon of suburbia. The green glow in the sky of insane explosions... bizarre electronica sound effects... OH YES! THIS IS FUCKING WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!
