Cobra Commander's San Diego Report: The Faculty, Disney's Tarzan, John Carpenter, Spiderman, Dogma

Here's yet another report from SAN DIEGO CON. To everyone that has written commenting on how the hoped I'd be at San Diego, I'm sorry I didn't make it. However, I will be attending DRAGONCON in Atlanta throughout the first of September, so I'll see ya there if ya can make it. Here's Cobra Commander....

Hope you had a good trip to Europe. Here's another rundown on the San Diego Comic Con - if you use any of it, call me "Cobra Commander". COBRAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

KEVIN SMITH PANEL:

Showed a few minutes from "Dogma" - a scene with Jay, Silent Bob, and Linda Fiorentino's character at a diner. If you have read the script already, it's the scene where Jay and Silent Bob discuss their relationship with John Hughes films. Hilarious scene.

After it was over, someone in the audience yelled out "cock teaser!" Kevin, without missing a beat, shouted back "We learned it from your mom!". :)

Dogma'll play at Cannes next year, then'll be released in October of 1999.

KEVIN WILLIAMSON PANEL:

Showed a rough cut of the trailer for "The Faculty". Sorry - you're not in it. But it looks pretty cool - spooky shots of plenty of teachers - especially Robert Patrick, Piper Laurie, and Jon Stewart. Also, he was pretty tight lipped about Scream 3. Saying he couldn't say anything because of "the internet". He did say two interesting things. One was that he's taking much longer to write Scream 3, because he didn't feel that he was given enough time to really put his best work into Scream 2.

The other interesting note - he said that his assistant slipped out three fake endings to Scream 2 on the internet just to throw everyone off. I'm wondering if it was to you, or to Corona's Coming Attractions.

X-MEN PANEL:

Missed it. AUUUUUUGGGGGGGGHHHH!!!

BLADE PANEL:

Nothing to do with Blade, but Stan Lee was asked about the future of Spiderman. He apologized that it's taken so long, he said that the lawyers are working on working out the legal mess that prevents anyone from going forward with a film project. He said that he expects it to take another year for it to be untangled, then he hopes that Jim Cameron still wants to do the project next year. JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES PANEL: John Carpenter was extremely cool. Two interesting bits from the Q&A with him. One - the music is not being changed for the domestic release. He doesn't know where that rumor started, but it's not true. Two - yes, he did tell some people on the set of Vampires that this would be his last film ever. However, he feels that way when he completes any of his films. He says that he takes a good vacation after each film, gets re-energized, then starts work on his next film. MOVIE TRAILERS: Got there late - missed a few. However, did get to see one thing that made us say COOL! They showed us a three minute "work-in-progress" clip of Tarzan with the Phil Collins music. I even recognized some of the drawings that Sir Etch-a-Sketch (or Magna Doodle) sent in. My thoughts - firstly, when I first heard that Phil Collins was doing the music, I had horrible nightmares of elephants dancing to Sussudio. But my fears were wrong - Collins is a drummer by trade, and his use of drums in the song used for the Tarzan clip were AWESOME. The song wasn't too bad either. The animation looks great - and the clip has this MINOR SPOILER. There's a scene of a baby Tarzan putting his hands up to an ape's hands. The ape puts it's hands up, too, but the baby Tarzan seems bothered that his hands are so different than the ape's hands. Later, after he rescues Jane (great sequence), he puts his hands up to her's and she puts her hands up. There's this great emotion that comes across when he realizes that he's found one of his own kind - even with no words, it really jumped off the screen. You could hear some gasps from people sitting around me. I'm telling you Harry - next summer, you've got to go. It's a blast.
