Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...
Count Yorga is one of those cult horror figures that has a lot more fans than you would expect based on just two movies, and two of those fans are Frank Darabont, currently working to (finally!) bring THE MIST to the screen and Tim Sullivan, director of 2001MANIACS, which just did really well at AFM, and which should finally be rolling out in 2005. Both guys are taking some time off at the start of December to present a COUNT YORGA double-feature at the Egyptian. Tim actually brought Robert Quarry to the 10th anniversary SHAWSHANK screening a couple of months ago, which is how I presume all of this got started. Here’s the details on what, where and when:
SUNDAY DECEMBER 5th, 5:00 PM at the American Cinematheque

COUNT YORGA DOUBLE FEATURE! IN PERSON ROBERT QUARRY!
At a time when the world had gone psychedelic but monsters had gone Gothic stuffy with imported Hammer horrors, Count Yorga, both movie and monster, was hip. Current. Cool. With his elegant wit and calm disdain of the clumsy mortals trying to stake his undead heart, there hadn’t been a vampire quite like Yorga, so unforgettably portrayed by horror icon Robert Quarry.
Now Yorga and Quarry are back with a rare double feature hosted by writer/director/Yorga acolytes Frank Darabont (SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) and Tim Sullivan (2001 MANIACS).
Count Yorga, Vampire (1970)
Originally conceived as a nudie film entitled "The Loves of Count Iorga”, COUNT YORGA was revamped as a serious fright fest and went on to become American International’s highest grossing film at the time. One of the first films to feature a vampire in a modern context, COUNT YORGA still packs a wallop with its unbridled thrills and ferocious performance by Quarry in the title role.
Return of Count Yorga (1971)
You can’t keep a good ghoul down! Yorga is back to terrorize Mariette Hartley and a small orphanage where he sets up shop to control his vampire brides. Much noted for its supernatural take on Charles Manson and his “family”, RETURN is that rare sequel- just as good as the first!
