I have to say... Daniel Handler is a very funny man. And mayhap even a very disturbed one. There’s a very tiny indie film coming out this weekend called RICK, starring Bill Pullman, which is a sort of retelling of RIGOLETTO that is horrifically adult nasty fun, and I’m guessing they aren’t going to be advertising it as “From the creator of LEMONY SNICKET.” Doesn’t surprise me, though, because the SNICKET books are much darker than your average kids fare. Literate and wicked and very, very funny, they should lend themselves quite nicely to the feature film treatment, especially with Handler himself writing the script.
This is the second trailer, and even though some of the footage is the same, we get a better sense here of how they’ve adapted the first three books into one film. Looks great to me, and Jim Carrey is so insanely dead-on perfect as Count Olaf that it’s a little scary. It’s like Handler created the role for him.
