Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a link over to the good folks over at Comingsoon.net. They have an interesting story about Tim Robbins and Miranda Otto in talks to join Tom Cruise in Steven Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS. I really like this casting, to be honest. I'm still unsure of what a modern day WAR OF THE WORLDS will turn out to be, but when David Koepp is at the top of his popcorn writing game he makes crowdpleasers like no other... especially when paired with Spielberg. I was 12 years old when JURASSIC PARK came out and I'm thankful I was that age when I saw the flick. It blew my socks off. Of course I can look back now and wish it was closer in tone to Crichton's novel, but I remember that wide-eyed awe I had when I saw the film for the first time, Red Vines clutched tightly in my pudgy little hand as John Williams' score rattled my brains in all its DTS glory.
Anyway, I'm psyched to see Spielberg attack this material and love the company he is keeping. Cruise has more street cred. after COLLATERAL (although I've always thought he was one of the best "leading men" in terms of charm and talent... Frank TJ Mackey anyone?) and the possible inclusion of Tim Robbins and Miranda Otto make me happy. They're just different enough to put some freshness into this blockbuster. I can't wait!
