Well, it’s a Korean film that’s being release in the US on September 10th, ya big goof. And here’s a review of it!

Tonight I had the extreme privilege of screening Kay Je-gyu’s TAE GUK GI (The Brotherhood of War) starring Jang-Dong-gun (NOWHERE TO HIDE) as Jin-tae Lee and Won Bin (GUNS AND TALKS) as the younger brother Jin-seok Lee. I say privilege because this film is utterly amazing. Here’s the skinny:
Kang Je-gyu’s sweeping wartime epic tells the story of two brothers forced to join troops at the onset of the Korean War in the 1950. The older, stronger, Jin Tae, and the pride of the family, Jin Seok, begin a long journey through the battlefields over ideologies in search of a way home. Realizing the family’s survival lies in Jin Seok’s education. Jin Tae sets upon his passionate crusade to win favor with his superiors, by fighting bravely and recklessly in order to request his brother’s return home. However, Jin Tae’s ascension into power divides the tow brothers between hope and glory, and a loss of their common love and their former life at home.
That’s the long and short of it. This film is not for the faint at heart with battle scenes that will rattle you to the core and rival if not surpass that of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. It is no wonder why it is the #1 Box office hit of all time in South Korea and that 1 out of 3 Koreans have seen this film.
This is also a picture with heart. When you watch the two brothers interact with one another and watch their relationship changes over the course of their time in the Korean War you gotta be a tough son of a bitch to not get a little choked up.
The cast is excellent with amazing performances even by their supporting cast with Lee EunJoo (RAINBOW TROUT) as Jin Tae’s fiancé, Young-Shin.
I highly recommend this film to anyone who is interested in war flicks, history, and family. With the wave of South Korean cinema coming to the States this is good to start the ride with.
