Hey folks, Harry here and I'm officially jazzed. After a long long time of waiting for an incredibly filthy new John Waters film, it looks like the wait is finally over. This is fantastic news!
Hey Harry... Just got back from a press screening of John Waters' new film, A Dirty Shame.
Now, I have never been a huge John Waters fan. I loved Pink Flamingos and will always have a special place in my heart for Hairspray and Cry-Baby, but overall I don't regard John Waters as a great filmmaker.
It's funny, though, that things have changed. I love this man. With A Dirty Shame, he has created a sexually explicit comedy that deals with the same issues as Footloose. This is a thoughtful film about social (mostly sexual) taboos and how our society regards them as, well, dirty.
I won't go into the plot too much, b/c it's too simple to even waste time on. I'd rather focus on the wonderful acting of Tracy Ullman, Johnny Knoxville and Selma Blair. Sure, the performances are over the top, but gosh, that's what makes the film so hilarious. Selma Blair, in particular, does a great job as the well-endowed daughter of Ullman. You'll see what I mean when I say "well-endowed". And I'm sure that will be one thing bringing people into the theaters. Ullman is her usual self, playing a role that one would have expected in her TV show. But she's damn good at comedic timing. Johnny Knoxville is just so much fun, you just want to join his crowd.
The NC-17 rating is wonderful. Honestly, I was by no means offended by the film. I am actually a little surprised that in today's society, where it's so easy to put in sex scenes and drugs and murder into a film, that this wasn't rated R. Didn't see this as being any worse than There's Something About Mary... although this film kicks Mary's ass.
I highly recommend this film, especially if you are looking to laugh your ass off.
Until next time,
PoeMan
