Michael Mann chats about COLLATERAL!

Hey folks, Harry here with a cool little preview that Michael Mann gave folks of COLLATERAL... hearing that he was introducing KISS ME DEADLY, BEVERLY HILLS COP, SUNSET BLVD and TOUCH OF EVIL as inspirations... well... let's just say, I'm DYING to see this movie now! Here ya go...

“Realizing COLLATERAL” with Michael Mann, Tom Cruise, and Barry Shabaka Henley

Over at Pacific Theatres in LA I had the opportunity to see Michael Mann, Tom Cruise, and the other guy (who was also in Terminal) discuss some of their favorite LA scenes from movies, and their own new LA movie, COLLATERAL. The disicussion was LA themed, as Michael Mann and company introduced Kiss Me Deadly, Beverly Hills Cop, Sunset Blvd. and Touch of Evil (with small clips from each movie) as sources of inspiration (of LA BASED MOVIES)

SPOILERS AHEAD:

I have not seen all of the film COLLATERAL. However, they screened select clips not noted in the trailer. I will describe them below. I am not sure how exactly they fit in the movie…so your guess is as good as mine.

Scene 1:

Jamie Fox picks up Jada Pinkett Smith in his cab. He uses some clever lines, they have a snidy conversation, and some sort of love sory probably develops later in the film. Nothing too exciting in this scene.

Scene 2:

This is a pretty interesting one. Jamie Fox is tied to the wheel by Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise has to make a “stop” (to kill someone). While inside, doing his business, some thugs come down the alley and rob Jamie Foxx (who is tied to the wheel). They also steal Tom Cruises briefcase (which he left in the cab). Tom Cruise comes ouf the building, after killing whoever he needed to kill, and proceeds to kill the robbers. He retrives his briefcase and Jamie Fox’s wallet. Nice.

Scene 3: FEVER

I believe they introduced this scene as the “fever” scene. I don’t know why. It begins with Tom Cruise sitting in the back of the cab with Jamie Fox driving down the road. Enter a wolf in the street. A pack of wolves cross the street. Audioslaves “Shadow on the Sun” blasts. We learn that (MAJOR SPOILER:) Tom Cruise is killing all of the people who are witnesses to some crime. They are all expected to go to trial (something of that nature). The FBI has trailed Tom Cruise. They catch up with him on his latest hit: a Chinese man in a night club. The FBI first mistakes Jamie Fox for the killer (for Tom Cruise). There is a rumble in the nightclub. Shots are fired. People disperse. Tom Cruise manages to get his mark…the Chinese man. However, the place is loaded with feds. So, in a sequence which took about 9 days  to shoot (or so they say) Tom Cruise basically pulls a Matrix esque (realistic…not quite sci fi like matrix) Kick Every Ass In The Room strategy, using his guns and some nice punches to take everyone out. He saves Jamie Fox (stregntheing their relationship…Jamie Fox is a prisoner of Tom Cruises character, yet Tom Cruise comes of as likeable and nice…simply a man doing a job…) from the Feds, and the scene ends, gunshots fading, people dispersing, and Jamie Fox and Tom Cruise escaping…(I think they escape…the scene is cut short before they get outside)

That’s about it….very interesting… the one UNFORTUNATE…is that the movie is shot with digitial..its still got the MICHAEL MANN FEEL…so its NICELY SHOT…hwoever, the DIGITAL looks like shit….oh well….saves money for a reason…

If you Use this Call me……………
