Here's a follow up to the earlier scoop, so here ya go...
I am a huge fan of Márquez and in
particular of this story. In case you don't know what the story is about, it deals with an elderly
couple in the fictional town of Macondo (were most of Márquez' stories take place). The
husband, a former military coronel, now spends his life waiting for correspondence that never
comes (BTW, the title translates as "No one writes to the coronel.". He and his wife are very
poor, and their town has been ruined economically by big ("American") businesses who bought
all the land from farmworkers and turned a once prosperous agricultural society into a banana
republic. His only hope in making any money to survive is in selling his prized fighting rooster to
the rich man in town who works for the banana companies. It is a wonderful story, and if done
right it will include some fascinating aspects of Latin American culture, specifically the
importance of elders and the art of cock-fighting. It will also be very critical of US policy in
Latin America, though this is done subtly in the story. Now be forewarned that Márquez has
always been very adamant about having movies made from his stories; I hope it stays true to the
original tale. If for anay reason you decide to post this (I'd be honored if you do!), call
me Salander3.
