Review of JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES from German Film Festival!!!

Ya know what, ol Bob Weinstein is gonna feel soooooooo bad for not having DIMENSION FILMS picking up JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES. Personally I feel this flick is better than anything DIMENSION has released, but obviously Bob didn't 'get it'. Which seems shocking to me given the Weinstein's notable streak of 'getting it'. Alas, at least the crew at SONY were able to see the movie as the kick ass balls to the wall flick that it is. Now if only James Cameron were to give the reins of PLANET OF THE APES to Carpenter. Can you imagine how uber-fucking-cool that would be? Imagine John Carpenter directing a James Cameron Script with Stan Winston designed Apes and a top of the line cast. Huh huh huh... drooooooool... Look a falling star... hmmmm what will I wish for? .... ANYWAY, here's a review of VAMPIRES from Germany, and guess what? He loved it. There are a couple of spoilers, but what the hell, right?

Hi Harry,

The following may contain some minor spoiler!

Last night I had the chance to see John Carpenter's Vampires here in Munich, Germany. We have an annual SF/Horror festival called the "Fantasy Film Fest" in selected theaters all over Germany. I was a little bit late getting my tickets so we had to sit front row.... man these Vampires are HUGE....

Now for the facts/opinion:

Clocking in at about 100 minutes, there is not a single boring or superfluous scene, very well edited and some extremely well done shots. I especially liked the opening sequence with the farm and the scene "rise of the Vampires from the ground".

The Music is great and really supports the mood of the film (and I'm not really a fan of Carpenter's soundtracks), I guess we saw the final version, so they won't add any boring popsongs by Puff Mama or Chloroform Dion...

I also liked the story, finally some new twists and angles on the whole Vampire business, although some parts reminded me of Near Dark (gotta love it) and the second half of From Dusk Til Dawn (George Clooney is so d*mn cool).

And about the ending, well I don't agree with Hallenbeck - I love it. There's no sudden change of mood for the film, the finale and the epilog really suit the whole story.

My only disappointment: The whole Black Cross story.. rather a lame item for a McGuffin ((c) Hitchcock).

The audience really loved the film, of course there were _lots_ of Carpenter fans (I saw at least 3 "Assault" T-shirts). There were also rumours that Helloween 7 aka H20 will be shown as the big surprise movie on Monday.

So all in all: outstanding cast, good story, great pictures - I'm looking forward to seeing Vampires again in October/November.

read you - jerry maguire :--)
