Hey folks, Harry here... Well, this sounds harrowing. I don't know if I could take watching a film shot in reality from unwanted children raised in the brothels of Calcutta... Sounds like too brutal an image. Wish Al Gore sent in his review!
Harry,
Just got out of a screening for an amazing documentary, called "Born into Brothels." It follows a western photographer into the heart of Calcutta, India's red light district as she teaches photography to the children of prostetutes. While it sounds bleak, and much of the imagery is, the children's stories are inspired -- and their photographs capture a truth that I have yet to see in a film. The two filmmakers spent nearly three years of their lives living in the brothels, gaining the trust of these "unwanted" children. The movie is a great testament to the power filmmaking can have. Definitely worth checking out.
On a side note, Al Gore was in the audience. I'd be curious to hear his reaction -- though the whole theater gave the film a standing ovation!
Signed,
