SUNDANCE: Viridiano on TE DOY MIS OJOS (aka I GIVE YOU MY EYES)!

Hey folks, Harry here... Now this review is technically not from Sundance, but from Spain... but the film is playing at Sundance and that's why the reviewer sent it in. English is a second or perhaps third language for "Viridiano" the reviewer, so be nice. He's trying to share his passion for this film with all of us, which is way cool of him. I love Rosa Maria Sarda, so this sounds excellent. Here we go...

Hi Harry!

I have been reading yor site for four years, but this is the first time I send you a report from Spain.

First of all, I want to say my English is not perfect, but I am going to try to explain what I want you to know as clear as I can.

I know you are now in Sundance Festival, where it is being screened the spanish film of the year. The film is called "TE DOY MIS OJOS" and I think it can be translated as "I give you my eyes". It is directed by a great woman called Iciar Bollaín. It has a lots of nominations for the Spanish Academy Awards, and I think it deserves all of them.

It is about the violence between a married couple, which is a hot theme here. Last year 72 women were killed by her husbands, and the amount of these kind of crime keeps on growing each year more.

I know other films have been made obout this subject, but what makes it so interesting and unique is the fact that it doesn´t show the violent husband as an agressive monster. He is a frustrated man who can´t talk about his feelings and that is opressed by his situation. He even gets into a help group to learn to deal with his fury. The movie explains many things that we usually don´t understand, as the fact that a woman that is being agreded by his husband keep on trying to get over it, because in a strange way, she still loves him. It also shows how the violence in the marriage has been hidden or taken as a normal thing through hundreds of years.

The acting in the movie is great, and maybe you remenber Rosa Maria Sarda from Almodovar´s "ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER", and the directing is really interesting. The movie is very realistic, and you can assume as real many of the situations and dialogues.

I hope you will be able to understand what I have written, but in the case you don´t, please go to see the movie, and tell your friends to do the same.

Call me Viridiano
