Jim N. Juice Reviews Snoop Doggs SOUL PLANE!!

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

SOUL PLANE? Really? They remade AIRPLANE... as SOUL PLANE?

I saw sneak of Soul Plane a few days ago...They claimed it was the 1st print screened in front of a crowd. The f/x were not complete.Overall dumb but funny, here is a review

Snoop Dog stars in Soul Plane, a ghetto fabulous version of the classic disaster spoof Airplane. This film leaves no ethnic joke unturned, with gags featuring a low riding airplane to Popeye’s chicken being served in “low class”. The film is chock with tons of low brow humor that makes the jokes in the Friday films seem as if they were written by Billy Wilder.

Rapper turned actor Method Man also goes along for the ride, but pretty much looks like he is in a spliff induced haze throughout the movie and doesn’t show any of personality that he has displayed in previous efforts.

The film features cameos from comedians such as DL Hughly, and John Witherspoon and crunk miesters Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz. “Funnyman”/professional leech Tom Arnold makes an appearance as the token white passenger whose family ends up as the only white passengers on board the inaugural flight of NWA airlines.

The basic plot of the film focuses on a young black man who wins a large settlement and decides to start his own “urban” airline and all of the “hilarious” problems associated with air travel. In today’s paranoid climate, many of the jokes come off in poor taste, but are funny nonetheless. Maybe this film will reduce some of the anxiety associated with air travel and terrorism.

Oddly enough Soul Plane borrows very few cues from the Airplane. Karl Malone’s role is riff on the Kareem Abdul Jabar role in the film, but most of the gags are new.

The most surprising aspect of this film is that I found my self laughing throughout; every dick joke and every fart joke was funny. Maybe they pumped in one of Snoops blunts through the A/C system.

The make up of the audience was much like the cast. In fact I think there only 4 white folks in the audience, but they seemed to be enjoying the film s well.

In the print that was shown the effects were not final and they did use some stock footage, but it didn’t matter, the film was still fun. Shooting must have wrapped recently because many of the gags were topical (Kobe jokes, etc.) Additionally, they used many current songs (50 cent, Lil Jon) so it will be interesting if they make the final cut. My guess is that licensing all those songs would eclipse the shooting budget of the film.

For the most part the jokes were pretty outrageous and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the terrorist gags get cut. Personally since this was a test cut I was hoping that some of the gags would have gone further.

The film borrows the very basic framework of the original Airplane film, but there are less sight gags and parody style jokes, just loads of smack talking, potty mouth, toilet humor, but most of the jokes hit their mark. It is a dumb and racist film, but its snappy pace and gag a minute makes it a fun ride.

No... seriously. There’s a film called SOUL PLANE? And it’s a real movie?

Wow.

"Moriarty" out.
