Hey folks, Harry here... Now you need to watch out because this reviewer discusses the very end of the film - so that means... big honking SPOILER WARNING. Overall the review is very positive, with some misgivings about the very end... however, it sounds that Favreau has made another wonderful flick. Here ya go...
Hey Hare, this is So and So writing in to tell you about “Elf”, which I saw today.
(First review ever, so sorry if I go everywhere.)
So, the movie begins a little slow, you know, the good old fashioned rules, etc, but still entertaining.
It’s when the movie hits New York (about 20 minutes in) that it Really gets fun. I Love Will Ferrel, and the this movie is his second best film performance (second only to “Zoolander”).
The cast was really well put together, not one person doesn’t give it there all, and I like that, I like that feeling. I think they all just wanted to make a great Christmas movie.
So: the girl love interest was So Pretty, and she has a great voice. One of the sweetest moments in the film was when SPOLIER she and Will sing together in the bathroom. Mmm. END SPOILER.
Now to the bad: And this will probably include SPOILERS here: The end of the movie felt very tacked on. Like, Will’s character gets reamed by Caan and he goes to, I guess, the Brooklyn bridge, and it’s snowing. And he’s looking into the water. And He Wrote A Goodbye Letter.
And I was so happy with the fact that this was almost another “It’s A Wonderful Life” ending, and then, literally as he looks in the water, thinking about suicide, Santa crashes in Central Park because the “Christmas Spirit” is low. (There’s a speedometer of it.)
I’m thinking now Yes! They’re gonna end this movie by somehow getting the Entire World to have Christmas spirit, brilliant! That would have probably made me tear up (as the song they sang earlier did, just for a moment, call me a fag, it’s okay).
And then this is where it gets tacked on. A crowd of people are outside Central Park, having heard something had crashed there. Well, you know that Entire World of people to get Santa off the ground I wanted?
Well, it’s actually only 20. 20 fucking people in New York can give Santa his flight back, which has to mean that no one, ON CHRISTMAS EVE, IN NEW YORK, had any Christmas spirit at all, when he crashed.
END SPOILER
Which is okay. It could have been a better ending but, really, it’s a nice sequence, and there’s a great reference to Big Foot, the Sasquatch, which is funny.
Okay, so that was my only problem, but overall a great family film. I laughed a lot. I just wish I’d cried more.
Thanks for reading.
So and So is my name.
