Toronto: Dogfish on Michael Winterbottom's CODE 46 with Tim Robbins

Hey folks, Harry here with Dogfish and his look at CODE 46 with Samantha Morton and Tim Robbins. Doesn't sound too promising, but a nice cast and an odd sci fi slant might be cool... Would love more views on this one. Here ya go...

Hi Harry,

I had the privlege of finishing out my week at the Toronto Film Festival with Michael Winterbottom's latest Code 46.

It is set in the future where people are restricted in their movement between cities. You must obtain a clearance to travel between cities from a control company called the Sphinx. These clearance papers are called papelles, they allow travel to a specific destination for only a certain prescribed time limit. People without papelles are restricted to either their resident city or if they violate any rules they are banished to desert shanty towns on the outside of the city.

Tim Robins plays a gifted investigator from Seattle sent to Shanghai to investigate the forgery of papelles in that cities Sphinx. Through the course of his investigation he meets Samantha Morton, a young woman who works for Sphinx and is the lead suspect in the forgeries. They are both drawn to one another and a night of passion ensues. Their budding romance is cut short when Tim Robins has to leave Shanghai because his papelle expires.

Tim Robbins is sent back to Shanghai to complete his investigation where he discovers that the woman has disappeared. Obsessed with the woman he attempts to find her. When he does he discovers that she has been accused of a Code 46 violation.

This film is more ill fated romance than science fiction. It had some very interesting ideas and was nicely constructed but was probably the weakest of the films that I've seen at the festival. However, I would still recommend it.
