Hey folks, Harry here... I so wish I was going to be able to attend this documentary out in L.A. You see, while Mark Ebner is a dear friend and one of the co-writers on my first book... the idea of him being captured on film being thrown out of the Viper Room on numerous occassions while being the muckraker that he is... well... I am sure I would howl in laughter repeatedly at it. That being said, a documentary about HUNTER S THOMPSON, well... as was evidenced by my posting of the non-film related interview with Hunter recently... I'm a total Hunter Whore. I love his writings, ramblings, quotes, appearances... just about anything and everything having to do with Hunter. So, of course, I would push you lucky L.A. whippersnappers in the general direction of this Doc... Also, check out the other Docs, and send in reports about what you see and love... Documentaries never get enough coverage, unless they're made by Michael Moore and criticize Republicans, in which case they get plenty of coverage right here on AICN. Where some evil red-headed commie pinko rat bastard operates under his own delusions... Enjoy Hunter if you go!
Attention Los Angeles Area Film Geeks:
From August 22-28, 2003, the InFACT Theatrical Documentary Showcase commands the screens at the swanky ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood. What makes this mini-fest cool is that it enables documentary films to qualify for Academy Award consideration by screening once a day for seven days in a commercial theater in Los Angeles.
And, in the festival line-up there's a hidden treasure - "Breakfast With Hunter," a 91 minute doc by Colorado filmmaker, Wayne Ewing. Buried somewhere in this film is footage of Hollywood muckraker Mark Ebner getting repeatedly thrown out of "an Evening with Hunter Thompson" at Fear and Loathing star Johnny Depp's Viper Room for doing what he does best - reporting!
Ebner reports: The "Viper Room Incident" as included in Ewing's film represents part 'n parcel of an ill-fated a script-to-screen "gonzo" report I was assigned to do for Premiere magazine. Apparently, Premiere (aka "Blow Job magazine") couldn't stand the heat of my efforts. After I showed up on a F&L location wearing a waste-length blonde wig, dark shades and an official Fear and Loathing baseball cap, Depp's flack at the time (Nancy Seltzer) had me fired off the story. I feel pleased and somewhat vindicated in that at least some of my railroaded "gonzo" adventure was preserved in a film being presented 'for Academy consideration.'"
