A Mixed Reaction To KILL BILL Volume One!!

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

This is the first review to come in from last night’s Boston screening. Well, that’s if you don’t count the two-word reaction Harry ran. This guy enjoyed some of what he saw, but it’s hardly a Neill Cumpston-style rant and rave. Check this one out...

Hi Harry

I was at the Landmark Theaters in Boston , "the nation's largest art-house chain of theaters". Quentin was there last night and presented the movie, told us we were the first group of people to see the film.

As you probably know it is told in Chapters, and although the film lacks the sparkling Tarantino dialogue we fell in love with in Reservoir Dogs, True Romance (the words were his!) and Pulp Fiction it still has traits of his style.

I won't give too much of the plot away and besides everyone knows that Uma is out for revenge yada yada yada

What I will say is that although the film was very well received by the audience, with the writer and director there (Mr Tarantino) what else would you expect?

When the film ended, I would like to have seen part 2 straight away, but then patience has never been one of my virtues.

So, what would I say about the film. Well, it is beautifully shot,! but if you don't like kung fu movies, then it isn't going to be your cup of tea. There are many many fight scenes. Beautifully choreographed, but they went on and began to merge into each other.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure that hardcore Tarantino and Kung Fu fans will love Kill Bill, but imagine if the original Matrix film contained 10 more fight scenes and less plot and dialogue.

To my mind, it could have been more heavily edited, lost some of the fight scenes (or made them shorter - one seemed to go on for about 15 minutes) and maybe been condensed into one movie.

The other problem I had is you know Uma isn't going to get her ass kicked hard enough for it to be final in Part 1... So you never sense she is any real danger.... You know she HAS to come back for Part 2 otherwise who is gonna Kill Bill?

Miramax will have a hard sell here, and I can see a big first weekend, then sharp drop offs. I just see the headlines now, when in the 2nd week, w! hen the film falls sharply and the final take is somewhere around $50 - $60M. It will be seen as a flop which will be pretty harsh.

So in summary expect:

- Little dialogue

- Little plot (compared to say, Pulp Fiction)

- Plenty of fight scenes

- Beautiful looking film

- Mixed reviews (from paid critics)

Cheers

Please... anyone else who saw the film... write in so we can get a sampling of reactions. Good... bad... I just want to hear what you all thought.
