El Guapo Has A Plethora To Say About DICKIE ROBERTS: FORMER CHILD STAR!!

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

I have less than no desire to sit through this. However, if you do, then maybe this review is for you:

Hello everyone, it is El Guapo here, and I have come to tell you about Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star starring David Spade.

David Spade's heyday, I think, was when he was teaming up with the late great Chris Farley. They were a great team, I loved Tommy Boy, and Black Sheep, although not as good, was still a very funny movie. They had this great dynamic where Farley was this bumbling fool that was just a complete moron, and Spade always was there to help him out and continually make fun of him. In his new film, Spade has just tried to do the Farley character with a little bit of wise-ass thrown in. It just doesn't work for me. Joe Dirt was just not that great of a movie and neither is this.

Don't get me wrong, there are some great moments in this movie. Spade actually does have some talent in the slapstick portions but then the entire movie is just filled with these stupid hallmark moments that just made me want to puke. There really wasn't anyone there to make fun of him, he just acted like a moron and made fun of everyone else. He needs somebody to bounce off of.

What this movie does have, though, is cameos. This movie has more cameos than even Last Action Hero, and we all know how well that movie did. "Dickie Roberts" has tons and tons of cameos of child stars. To give you an example, he plays poker with Dustin "Screech" Diamond, Lief Garret, Corey Feldman, Danny Bonaduce, and none other than Barry "Greg" Williams. Plus there are many others like Jon Lovitz, Rob Reiner, Rachel Dratch, and Brandan Fraser. I probably missed scores of others because I am too young to have seen a lot of these shows.

Before I run off too much let me tell you the premise. Spade as Dickie Roberts is a guy in his mid-thirties who was a child star. He needs the love that came with being famous. He has been trying to get back in show business since forever. Then, suddenly he finds out about this movie that Rob Reiner is directing that is the perfect come back vehicle. The only problem is that Reiner doesn't think that he is right for the part because he never had a childhood. So, his brilliant plan is to move in with a family so that he can learn what it is like to be a kid again.

Well, this being a hollywood comedy it has to have a lot of meaning and a great happy ending, and this doesn't fail. But it lays it down so thick with every scene that I couldn't handle it. Neither could a lot of others because quite a few people left, but I stuck it out because I had to tell you all about it. After being an objective observer I am going to have to say that this movie will fail. It is not going to break 30 million. But, I could be wrong. With all of this hoopla with the b, c, and d list celebrities coming into our homes every night on every moronic reality series there is, now, people might want to see a movie that has them all in there. They will see them all at the end: in the credits they have like 30 of the most famous, all of the brady boys are there, and they sing this kinda funny song about how tough it is to have once been famous.

So, there you go, David Spade is trying to break in to the world of Adam Sandler territory and sadly this time he has failed. Maybe that is because he didn't have Sandler do a cool little cameo in this one.

El Guapo signing off

Better you than me, dude.
