A Quick Riff On THE MAYOR OF SUNSET STRIP!!

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

I had a chance to see this film at the LA Film Festival, and I blew it. I just couldn’t clear my schedule. And now the movie’s been picked up by First Look Media and Lakeshore Entertainment for a record 2 million dollars, making it the second highest selling documentary of all time, right next to BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE. Doesn’t surprise me, either. Hickenlooper’s the real deal, a guy who knows his way around a camera, and Rodney Bingenheimer is fascinating.

A look at The Mayor of Sunset Strip

Want to see a film about LA DJ Rodney Bingenheimer?

If the answer to that question is ‘who’ or ‘no’... well, they're THE WRONG FUCKIN’ANSWERS!!

This documentary directed by George Hickenlooper, I can’t believe neither of these two guys have changed their names! is a fascinating look at a guy who as well as being entirely out-to-lunch, is strangely charismatic. He’s like the bastard child of Andy Warhol and Valerie, Carol Kane’s witch from The Princess Bride, with a bit of Forest Gump and Zelig thrown in for good measure – I shit you not!!!

Other than a vast array of A-list musicians: Bowie, Ray Manzarek, Cher, Deborah Harry, Courtney Love, sorry I said A-list didn’t I? Other than this lot and more regaling us with tales of Rodney’s legendary status amongst LA’s music fraternity we are also treated to a far more personal and intimate portrait of an unsung and under appreciated living legend. Not surprisingly, the soundtrack’s killer too.

It’s a sometimes sad, illuminating, often touching and always, always entertaining insight into a man who always pursued fame, he got some but he’s gonna get one hell of a lot more!

Rodney – your ship is about to come in!

Crap. I don’t think the film is playing again until the Toronto Festival later this year, and it’s not playing in major markets until spring of 2004. A few quick sentences aren’t enough. I want to see this movie now. I’ve been on a real documentary jones lately. Just got done watching the very interesting HORNS & HALOS earlier, and the idea of watching Rodney’s story play out in clips and interviews... it sounds great.

"Moriarty" out.
