A Quick Dip In The SWIMMING POOL!!

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

I gotta give it to the distributors of SWIMMING POOL. There’s a lot of promo crap that gets sent to the Labs, and most of it just gets stuck in a box at the back of the closet marked “USELESS SWAG.” But every now and then, someone sends out promo items that stand out. In the case of Focus Features and SWIMMING POOL, they’ve been sending flip flops and goggles and all sorts of... well... pool-related items. Perfect timing, too. If the film’s as cool as a dunk in a real pool, then I’ve gotta check it out. I know Harry dug it, and the chance to see Tinkerbell from this Christmas’s PETER PAN in the buff can’t be overlooked, can it?

What up Mori?

So, I just saw the perfect date movie, "Swimming Pool".

"Swimming Pool" you ask with a tilted head. "Swimming Pool isn't a date movie", you add. "'The Whale Rider' is a date movie. Or a funny romance. Not 'Swimming Pool'."

Well, I'm here to say (actually write) that "Swimming Pool" is a date movie, a date movie that can lead directly to the bedroom. That's right folks, go see "Swimming Pool" on a first date and you could end up right where you want to be.

This film is funny, smart, very well acted, and very sexy. It's not "Y Tu Mama Tambien" or "Basic Instinct", but it's still pretty damn sexy.

The plot goes like this: A repressed, bitter, aging, near alcoholic, British crime author (played brilliantly by Charlotte Rampling) decides she wants to start afresh and write something totally new/original. Her publisher offers her his house in the countryside of France and she jumps at the idea. Soon she is in scenic France and writing a new crime book. And then BAM! INCITING INCIDENT! The publisher's half-French, beautiful, young, sexpot daughter (played very well by Ludivine Sagnier) shows up and destroys the author's peace and concentration. For a while the two women butt heads over everything from the food in the refrigerator to the sexpot's very loud, very graphic sex with total strangers. But then the author begins to write a new novel. The new one is about the young woman. And then the movie changes to. As soon as the author starts writing about the sexpot and not about a murder mystery the film itself morphs into a murder mystery.

I enjoyed the film's build up and the character's introductions. Literally an hour of the film is devoted to the author's character. And plus, I enjoyed the director's choice to ogle the naked young thing as much as possible. The naked young thing spends much of the film... well... naked.

The end of the film spawns my only complaint, but I enjoyed the beginning and middle too much to, in the end, not recommend this film.

PS- Is Herc really gonna kick that comic book guy in the nuts?

Yes, GUYINTHEBACKROW. Yes, he is.

Thanks for the review.

"Moriarty" out.
