Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...
I finally got a chance to catch up with PHONE BOOTH the other day, and I gotta say... I prefer the new Joel Schumacher. Since he was “reborn” after the disaster of BATMAN & ROBIN, there’s a new honesty to the work he does. I might not think FLAWLESS or PHONE BOOTH or TIGERLAND are great films, but they seem sincere, and they seem like they’re the work of someone who genuinely enjoys his craft.
Next up is this long in-development biopic, VERONICA GUERIN, and it sounds like our reviewer liked what they saw...
Hello, just got back from a screening, a preview I think, of Veronica Guerin at the Cambridge Film Festival here in the UK. It was introduced by the director and star and I don't know how interested in this film you are – so I'll try to keep this kinda short.
The film is good but not great, however Cate Blanchett is, as always, really great. The visual style of the film is definitely in keeping with Joel Schumacher's post Batman work - looking at it, its kind of amazing that it was made by the same guy who did those films - in the same way its equally surprising that it was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
Anway, at the Q&A afterwards Mr. Schumacher was asked about this and he mostly ducked the question preferring to talk about the cinema next to his mother's dress shop where he used to watch foreign films.
However he did admit to being influenced by the young film makers today (though he didn't say which ones). Cate Blanchett also mentioned the cinematographer as being really important in establishing the look of the film.
Nobody mentioned the fact this story has already been done but the involvement of the family was stressed, Mr. Schumacher, told us that showing the film to Veronica's mother was the most difficult thing he's ever done.
The place was really packed out for the screening - we don't get too many famous people here, though actually I did see The Brief History Of Time guy Stephen Hawking at a showing of Full Frontal a few months ago.
One last thing - Cate Blanchett was asked about the differences in playing real people and fictional characters and amongst lots of other interesting comments I think she said that if she'd ever actually read The Lord of the Rings she'd never have accepted a part in the films!
If you use any of this please could you credit it to: The Iguana
I’d love to get another review of this one from anyone who was there, and maybe get some more detail about the film itself. Anyone? Anyone?
"Moriarty" out.
