Some Info On Almodovar's BAD EDUCATION!!

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

I love Almodovar. Don’t love every one of his films, per se, but I’ve always had a great admiration for his particular brand of lunacy, ever since I saw MATADOR in the theater. TALK TO HER was a particularly high point for this writer/director, and I’m sure many fans have been wondering how he planned to follow it up:

Hi Moriarty,

Since my first scoop (a review of Talk to her) more than a year ago (wow!) I haven't sent anything to you. I'm glad to be sending you news about, what else, Almodóvar's next. You all know the name of the project and other things, but this I send you is my (poor) traslation of a press conference he did yesterday (june 16) announcing the start of the shoot and some interesting details about the genesis of the movie and more. I hope you enjoy and sorry again for my english:

In a press statement yesterday Pedro Almodóvar has announced he starts shooting today (June 17th) his 15th film. Before it was called Bad Education, the project was tentatively named The Visit, after a short story the director wrote some 30 years ago. While rereading it, he didn¹t quite like its tone and decided instead to build a rather different movie around it. What remains is a colder and darker story with this visit at the core, (like the black & white short film "The shrinking lover" was at the center of Talk to Her).

The director confesses he now feels more and more confortable with this kind of estructures dealing with pararell plot points, in this case triangles that turn into vicious circles.

The story evolves around three visits. The first a visit to the past. Two school kids get to know each other, movies and fear in a catholic school in the sixties. Their literature teacher, a priest, is a witness and crucial part in their coming of age.. These two kids meet again once in the 70¹s and again in the 80¹s. Terrible things happen in between that Almodóvar will keep a secret until the movie opens soon next year.

Bad Education does not intent to go against Catholic Church, the director says. It will be a fatalistic thriller where all the characters keep secrets and take big risks despite the consecuences. It¹s set in a raw environment with an all male cast such as those in the war movies. Troubles casting the main character was the reason why Almodóvar had to delay the filming of Bad Education and shoot instead Talk to Her. But then Gael García Bernal (Y tu mamá también) came along. He plays three different roles in the film (one a travestite) and has been rehearsing this pivotal role for five months now. Fele Martínez (Amenábar¹s Thesis) and Javier Cámara (Talk to her) are also part of the cast.

With some of his usual crew behind the camara, including talented Alberto Iglesias in the soundtrack, Almodóvar is curious about what the final movie will look like. He faces this shoot with the same passion and uncertainty he always did and confesses he wouldn¹t change this project for anything in the world. Hours before the start he feels a kind of dead calm which he says is just a disguise for hidden fear.

No need to apologize for your English, man. You speak and write it better than some of our regular contributors. Thanks for the info.

"Moriarty" out.
