What's Amenabar Up To Next'!

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

He's a distinct stylist and a muscular storyteller, and he makes his actors shine. If only for those reasons, it would be interesting to know what Alejandro Amenabar is working on. As it is, the film sounds very interesting, and I'm sure we'd love to hear more about it...

Dear Harry and others: I''m sure you're anxious for news about Alejandro Amenabar's next project after making 'The Others'. The name of his new film is "Mar Adentro (Deep Sea)". These are totally confirmed news: The plot is based upon the life of Ramon Sampedro. His story is very well known in Spain. He was paralyzed in all of his body limbs, except his head, since an accident suffered in the coast when he was a young man. The end of his life was filled of controversy as he requested the Spanish State the right to die by legal euthanasia, which he was denied after 25 years of legal fight. The movie won't be shot in America and won't have any financial support from the Hollywood industry. It will be produced by Spanish Producer Sogecine and own based Himenoptero. Also, it won't be English-spoken. It will be shot in Spain, in Autumn 2003. He has co-written the screenplay again with Mateo Gil, who helped him while writing the 'Thesis' screenplay and also co-wrote 'Open your Eyes'. The lead actor of the project will be Javier Bardem, the Spanish who was nominated for Best Actor to the Academy Awards for his fabulous role in 'Before Night Falls.' The story is situated in a total drama context, but also a few elements of thriller and mistery will already be present in it. Alejandro Amenabar has expressed "Although it may surprise the change of tone, I feel this movie is not a break, but a logical following of everything I'm interested about cinema and life. Ramon Sampedro's story was going around my head through the years, and it was investigating a little more about his personality and experiences, when I decided this should be my next project. I wasn't lucky to meet Ramon personally, but I'm sure the inmense talent of Javier, will come back to life an undoubtly so passionate character." Also Javier Bardem told that "this is also a story about those who achieve to pass over his anxiety of possession of everything they love. Those who are deeply free inside themselves. About a man whose only God is his own conscience. It's a privilege that I'm part of telling this stoty and to know that Alejandro Amenabar's vision is going to reflect it. A director at the name of his talent, which is so much." I know you'll think this is a very limited information, but take into account the secret that Amenabar always wants to keep while making his projects, so I think this will be totally worth publishing. Tom Ripley

I know English isn't your first language, Tom, so I appreciate you putting the report together for us. Very interesting stuff, and potentially very powerful. I'm a big fan of OPEN YOUR EYES and THE OTHERS, and I'll definitely keep my eyes open for any other news on this one as it comes together.

"Moriarty" out.
