Well, unless you’ve been buried under a rock somewhere, or kept in a state of suspended animation in an icy cave in the Antarctica, you know that "Stargate" and "Independence Day" creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin have a "Godzilla" movie coming out this summer.
And, if you’ve been reading Coaxial News for any length of time, you know that said movie will spawn an animated TV series which will debut this Fall. I know, I know - on first consideration, this doesn’t sound like too great an idea. But Emmerich and Devlin have expressed an interest in making the "Godzilla" animated series something "Godzilla" fans of *all ages* would find accessible and enjoyable. With this in mind, MECHA-STREISAND sent Aint It Cool the following break-down of this animated spin-off.
MECHA-STREISAND indicates that a majority of the traditional Toho "monsters" will be available to make appearances in the new series. Here’s some of the special guests MECHA-STREISAND says we might expect:
BIOLLANTE - gigantic & bad-ass octopus/rose-bush.
GIGAN - described by The Powers That Be as a flying alien cyborg with eyes that shoot laser-beams.
GIMANTIS - really big praying mantis.
GABARA - a dragon-type creature who initially appears in one’s dreams before becoming flesh. Gabara "generates and radiates electrical current".
HEDORAH - aka "The Smog Monster". Basically a walking, screaming, oozing gob of pollution, contamination, waste, etc. Belches out corrosive clouds of nastiness and uses it as a fearful destructo-weapon. Also sounds a bit like my ex-wife.
SPIGA - if you don’t like spiders…
MEGALON - drills for arms and rays shoot out of the "crown" around his head. Said to be conceived as very elegant and regal.
MANDA - big-ass, poisonous snake. Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?
ANGILAS - dinosaur-ish, spiky skin. MECHA-STREISAND says "he has a tiny brain and a desire to impale". My little boy has a similar condition.
MOGERA - weapons system devised by the military to combat Godzilla. It’s a massive vehicle that can break into an air fortress or sub-terranean attack craft.
TITANOSUARUS - basically a big creature that can create adverse weather conditions (mostly wind related) with it’s immense tail.
An assorted variety of villains - human, alien, natural and supernatural.
Now, "Godzilla" fans may notice some of the creatures from the film series are missing. King Ghidora, Mecha-Godzilla, and Rodan are no where in this proposed line-up. Why? MECHA-STREISAND indicates said creatures are either still in the process of "being negotiated" (presumably with Toho), but were more likely being reserved for use in anticipated sequels to this summer’s "Godzilla" movie. Words is the new film is the first of three parts…
There should be more "Godzilla’ news in the coming days, including the cast of characters which will drive this animated series. And yes, Emmerich and Devlin’s "Godzilla" character *will* be in the animated series. He / she / it just didn’t get mentioned above. I figured if the title of the show is "Godzilla", Big G’s presence is something of a foregone conclusion…
