Hey folks, Harry here... Well, while non-specific feature news, this is all interesting nonetheless. Most interesting to me is the C.O.R.E. news as being the new Digital company that is being acquired by Disney and the idea that their first Digitally created feature film will be helmed by Computer Animation Genius SPAZ! That's cool news! Here ya go...
Hey Harry, First time contributor here, I just wanted to let you know about a couple of things I've heard about just recently. I'm a computer animation student / nerd in Toronto, and I've heard a couple computer animation related rumours that I thought people might be interested in.
First off, I don't know if you've heard about this or not: AnimationMagazine.Net is running an article on a new Lucasfilm endeavour: Lucasfilm Animation. Reuters is also running a story on it: The Reuters Story On Yahoo!
Apparently this is going to be Lucas' new Pixar-style animation house. Anyway, it makes perfect sense - George has been migrating to a more kid oriented style of movies, and this would be a great way for him to do that. Also, just from watching the DVD extras on Episode II, you kind of get the feeling that the only performances Lucas is really willing to invest any kind of effort into are the ones given by his digital actors. Heck, Yoda was the most life-like actor in Episode II and he wasn't even real. On a side note, I wouldn't be surprised to hear an announcement from Lucasfilm sometime in 2005 that they've begun production on Star Wars: Episodes 7, 8 & 9 - to be done completely in CG. That last bit is just pure speculation though.
Second; this is a rumour that's been milling about in T.O. for a little while, and it looks like it's about to pan out. It seems that C.O.R.E. digital, a Toronto based FX and animation company (owned by William Shatner, no less), will be attempting to fill Pixar's enormous shoes in the Disney lineup. Expect an announcement this Thursday with specifics, but what I know so far, is that it will be directed by Stephen "Spaz" Williams (The guy responsible for the CG dinos in Jurassic Park, and the zany mask effects in "The Mask"), and they're shooting for a wide theatrical release.
