What Is Thomas Hayden Church Doing ROLLING KANSAS'!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

This one really hasn’t been on my radar at all, and let’s see if our spy can figure out why:

Dear Harry,

I just got back from an early screening of the new comedy no one will probably ever see, ROLLING KANSAS. If someone ever wanted to know what a movie that was made by Noel from Wings would be like, this film is their dream come true.

Thomas Hayden Church, the loveable good from Wings and the loveable wise ass from Ned and Stacy has crafted a film that was pitched to me as STAND BY ME meets DAZED & CONFUSED. WILD STRAWBERRIES had more in common with those films than ROLLING KANSAS does.

The film follows five guys on their search for a palace of ganja, driving from some nameless university in Texas to Kansas. They travel to Kansas four days before finals and nothing really changes the characters, with the exception that one of them figures out that he's gay and another one realizes he needs to get his shit together in order to have a happy life. The main characters in the film all have there little quirks (one who "knows" he's gay, a cripple, a fat narcoleptic, etc.) and the group works pretty well together. No new ground is covered here, except an interesting way to kill a pet bunny.

The film's pacing was pretty fast, although a gratuitous scene in a strip club called "The Poon Saloon" (I love that name!) should have been taken out. When all seems hopeless, the fellas meet a lone stranger named Oldman, played by Rip Torn. Certainly this guy wouldn't know a thing about a little weed growing in Kansas, now would he?

The movie received a major boost from cameo appearances by Church and Kevin Pollack, everyone's favorite U.S. Marshall team from 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND. They once again play federal agents who confront the group of dope fiends near the end of the film. Church steals his own movie!

The film had an interesting sense of humor, but when it tried to be dramatic (in the case of one character's longing for his ex-girlfriend), it fell flat on its ass.

I wouldn't really recommend the movie. I laughed a few times, but I don't think this will be getting a theatrical release. I'm holding out for NED & STACEY: THE MOVIE.

Blind Colonel

Well, looks like the Blind Colonel saw plenty. Anyone else had a peek at this one and want to react?

"Moriarty" out.
