Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
Joaquin Phoenix as The Man In Black? Reese Witherspoon as June Carter? I guess I’m going to have to see it to believe it. That’s the story according to MTV News, and they do good work over there, even though they’re not always thought of as a movie news site. Ryan Downey has established a history of breaking some good scoops in the last few years, and you could certainly do worse than bookmark them to check in on.
In the meantime, as you read the letter below, you might want to hop over to Mark Romanek’s site, where you can check out his phenomenally cool video for Cash’s recent cover of the Nine Inch Nails song “Hurt.”
Hey Harry,
MTV news is reporting that Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon are playing Johnny Cash and June Carter in "Walk the Line". It is based on Johnny's life and and will probably focus on his youth and drug addictions. Now there is no man on earth that could portray Cash dead-on without feeling fake, so pretty much any actor would be miscast. June Carter needs someone more plain to play her. Too bad Sissy Spacek is too old.

Thanks,
Steve McQueen (the coolest motherfucker on the silver screen)
I’m certainly curious to see how this plays out. Mangold is a really talented filmmaker, even if I’m not a fan of choices like KATE & LEOPOLD or the upcoming IDENTITY, which played out like Donald Kaufman’s THE 3 in script form. Maybe he took the material and made it rock’n’roll onscreen. Even if he didn’t, I’m still interested in what he’s got coming up next.
"Moriarty" out.
