Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
Both of these letters refer to projects that will turn out to be cult items at best, but that’s the fun of my mailbox... I get stuff about big giant blockbusters as well as letters about tiny films no one has ever heard of.
YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS was one of last year’s coolest albums, and I would imagine that fans of The Flaming Lips would be excited by this news:
Hi Harry,
The Flaming Lips have made a movie.
TFL is one of these cult-phenom bands that never quite makes the big time, but never quite goes away, either. They've been around for about 20 years now, and I just went to their website for the first time. On the site is a trailer for their movie, "Christmas on Mars." It looks pretty amateurish, which isn't much of a surprise since it was financed by Warner Brothers.
At any rate, the trailer does have one significant high point: you get to see Steve from Blue's Clues shout, "We're fucked!"

The trailer for this next one has me hooked. I love stories like this, glimpses into corners of obscurity, and I am fascinated by this story:
Moriarty:
I sent this link to Knowles, but who knows if he'll pay it any mind...
A couple guys who used to live here in Columbia, MO, moved off about a year and a half ago to make a documentary about Jandek, a reclusive musician (musicians?) who has been recording albums in his house since the late '70s. Supposedly, no one knows who Jandek is, and his only method of contact and distribution of albums is a P.O. box in Houston. Anyway, these guys have spent the last year interviewing some well-known musicians (Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening and Dub Narcotic Sound System, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, etc.) and writers about the Jandek legend, and what they've put together is a movie called "Jandek on Corwood." I'm not sure if they're finished with the movie or not, but they have a trailer up right here, along with some pretty interesting interviews. A lot of us who know Paul and Chad have been keeping up with this, and the word coming down the pipeline is that they're going to be hitting some of the big festivals in the next year. Just thought I'd pass it along - not necessarily the coolest of news, but it might pique someone's interest on the AICN front.
Call me the Admiral.
No pun intended, but both of these sound fascinating. Thanks for the e-mail, guys.
"Moriarty" out.
