Invasion America

What follows is the second part of RENO’s message from a few days back. Last time, as you recall, RENO was in the process of telling us about "Prey" and "Poodle Springs", before I cut him off, saying his "Invasion America" review would be coming up later this week. Well, as I promised, here it is.

RENO does a pretty good job giving you a sense of what "Invasion America" is all about. Wish I had an image to go along with it, but I don’t have a scanner to scan the "Invasion America" artwork which was in a recent TV Guide article about the show. There may also be some artwork on other web sites around the Net if you wanna go look for them. I’d do it for you but I got a flu shot yesterday. I didn’t know this, but when you get a flu shot - they give you the flu. I guess that’s why they call it a flu shot.

I should have expected the worst when the nurse in my doctor’s office actually had me sign a release form stating I understood the dangers of taking a flu shot. This form was gigantic - went into nauseating detail about everything that could go wrong when taking a flu shot. They made it sound like I was being exposed to that bird-loving nightmare which caused The Great Hong-Kong Chicken Holocaust a few weeks back. It was terrible.

Then they expose this needle that could go all the way through Arnold Schwarzenegger’s arm. It could go all the way through a cow, in fact. And they stuck me with it. And it hurt. Then they told me to wait in the waiting room to make sure I didn’t drop dead from the shot they just gave me. They never told me I could leave so I just sat there until they threw me out. Then I got home last night with this big knot in my arm, manifesting every single symptom that was on that list of potential side effects (except for the one about dying). I’m sure this is probably just the power of suggestion. But I swear to god I am achy and have a fever and feel tired. Really, I do. Really.

As such, I’m not gonna go looking for "Invasion America" images tonight. No disrespect to the show, I’m just gonna sit here and pout about my poor arm which the government injected some kind of mind-controlling, paranoia-inducing experimental toxin into. "Batman And Robin" was good - go rent it! Oh my god - it’s starting…

Here’s RENO:

INVASION AMERICA- The first prime time animated series that isn't a comedy is coming soon from the WB.

Like "Prey", the opening episode doesn't give viewers all the answers to what the series is about, but it is a lot more satisfying.

Seems there's this kid (whose name escapes me) who is half-human, half alien. His father is prince of an alien culture that has been slowly infiltrating the American military, preparing for a full blown invasion of the planet.

While the kid is the hero, he's only seen for a few moments in the show's opening episode - as part of the set up for a flash back, detailing how his father came to Earth, discovered what the alien military was up to (in violation of the alien prince's father's orders), and then had to go on the run.

The series looks as if its story arc will be complex without being incomprehensible. Nicholas Meyers ("Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Kahn") helped develop the series for Amblin, so I've high hopes that this should pan out for the best. The animation is slightly anime in style, but feels more like one of the cartoons based on Marvel Comics characters.

Overall, not a bad effort, but time will ultimately tell…
