Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
If Knowles were awake, I’m sure you’d be subjected to another 400 repetitions of the phrase you’ve come to know means there’s something about GODZILLA, the real and true Toho beast, and today’s no exception. Check this out:
Woo woo!! Pooh-san here in the Land of the Rising Yen. Just saw the latest Toho Godzilla flick the other day. Me & my brother have a long-standing tradition of catching Godzilla in the theater every Christmas (they usually get released every year in December). I know you're into this kind of thing, and I haven't seen much else regarding this on the site -- this was the BEST Godzilla movie I've seen since the 70's, bar none. Right from the beginning when the Big Green Guy comes up out of the sea during a typhoon, you know this is gonna be a good one. Mecha-Godzilla is cloned out of the original black & white movie Godzilla's bones and goes berserk the very first time they take him out! What's not ta like! Mass destruction that leaves the city of Yokosuka in ruins (hometown of the current Prime Minister, Koizumi, btw, as well as the U.S. 7th Fleet's base).
This was a Bad Guy Godzilla movie, which are the ones I'm most partial to. There's great scenes of him blasting Tokyo into ruins for no better reason than he's a MONSTER! It's great!
The ratio of Godzilla Action to Human Drama was thankfully pretty good this time around. I'd rather see a Godzilla movie with NO people in it at all (except for those who run screaming from him and get trampled underfoot!), but this time it was reasonably bearable. The pretty girl who single-handedly pilots Mecha-Godzilla to a draw with Godzilla (yeah, right) is one of the more unannoying non-monster characters I've seen in a while. The child (damn, why do they always have kids?) was also unobtrusive, having no psychic powers nor interfering with the film's more important action & destruction.
You've got Godzilla on the rampage, you've got a Mecha-Godzilla who goes berserk and trashes a city, and you've got some classic moves like the body slam and swinging Godzilla around by his tail. And it all looked GOOD! I'm talking Man In Suit good. Giant Monster Flicks don't get much better than this, certainly not for the past 30 years.
I hope Peter Jackson catches this one before he remakes King Kong.
Destroy All Monsters!
Pooh-san
Sounds like a blast. Anybody know when or how we’re going to see this one Stateside?
"Moriarty" out.
