THE HOT CHICK!! Best Film Of The Year'!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Of course not. What are you, soft in the head?

Still, this guy liked it. Go figure.

Hey, Harry!

Sorry to hear about Star Dreck. I have to admit I am a trekkie, but your review has me stunned an even a little hesitant. I'll still go see it, but maybe I'll wait until after the first weekend rush so I won't inflate their opening numbers making them think 'If they'll buy this shit, they'll take anything!'

I just got back from seeing one of the funniest movies of the year (Greek Wedding notwithstanding ... Austin Powers was a dissapointment) ... The Hot Chick.

That's right, a Rob Schneider film. Quick rundown (and no more of a spoiler than you see in the trailer) ... Schneider is a loser who crosses paths with Jessica and her too-popular-for-you friends. Through some silly and irrelevant magic, Schneider and Jessica's essences switch place. Jessica wakes up inside Schneiders body.

Now the important part ... I laughed my ass off ... and so did the rest of the theater. There was hardly a scene that went by that I didn't find myself at least chuckling, but usually I was doubled over. Even though the premise and most of the sight gags are over the top, there were small subtle bits that pulled it out of the normal former-SNL-cast-member-crapping-pot. Like the way Jessica's friends were always demanding to see his/her new penis (I know I said subtle moments, but you'll understand when you see it.) I also liked how the characters were a little more real. Her friends weren't total morons, and Jessica wasn't a total bitch ... she just felt entitled because of her beauty and popularity.

Schneider excelled in playing Jessica. Not for a moment did it seem that he wasn't a 17-year old girl trying to manage in the body of a 30-something year old guy. Rachel McAdams plays Jessica and the few scenes in which we get to see her emulate Schneider's loser character are fantastic and happen infrequently enough to stay funny.

And Anna Faris (as Jessica's best friend, April) steps above and beyond 'Scary Movie' ... she proves that she has a real gift for comedy ... especially in her eyes, when she's talking about the man she loves.

The only flaw is the ending. Sure it's too convenient, and perhaps illegal, that Schneider, her friends, her boyfriend, her family (including her cross-dressing younger brother) all end up inside a strip club for the big conclusion ... but you forgive the filmmakers because they've let you have so much fun up to that point ... and it was the right time to end the movie.

I'm actually thinking about seeing it again ... or maybe sneaking into it to lift my spirits, and wipe my tears after watching Star Trek.

Oats

Anna Faris is cute, and almost enough to make me want to see this. But the key word is “almost.” I thought SOUTH PARK really handed Schneider his ass a few weeks ago, and I can’t see commercials for this film now without flashing back on how they roasted him. Maybe it’s time for Rob to branch out a bit and get back to films where he plays Sylvester Stallone’s Little Buddy. Or something. Just... change it up a bit, man...

"Moriarty" out.
