"STORM OF THE CENTURY"

BR’ER RABBIT sent in this little article, which appeared in The Portland Press Herald on December 9, 1997. By the way, it’s from Portland, ME - not the other Portland. This article kind of speaks for itself, so I’ll let it do just that.

From the Portland Press Herald (Portland, ME) on December 9, 1997.

"Stephen King TV Show May Film In Maine" by Ray Routhier.

Stephen King's new TV miniseries may be filmed partially in Maine. Producers of the ABC miniseries ''Storm of the Century'' plan to film about a week's worth of scenes in Southwest Harbor, Bass Harbor and Bernard in January, said Lea Girardin, director of the Maine Film Office.

Mark Carliner Productions is making the three-part series for ABC. An air date has not been set.

While many of King's books and short stories have become films, King wrote an original screenplay for this miniseries.

Girardin said the filming is still tentative, because not all the agreements with property owners have been signed. Still, the production company has begun planning for the shoot in the three tiny coastal towns, located south of Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island.

Girardin said the crew will film mostly exteriors of buildings and locations in the towns and will build structures to look like snowbanks so the towns will seem as if they've just been hit by a snowstorm. The storm scenes will be filmed elsewhere.

The miniseries has not been cast yet. Besides filming in January, Girardin said the crew plans to film two days in April and one in May.

This film shoot, though short, is another example of how King's Maine residence -- he lives in Bangor -- helps bring the film industry here. In the past few years, the film ''Thinner'' and the TV miniseries ''The Langoliers'' -- both based on King's works -- were filmed in Maine.

Presumably, BR’ER RABBIT has some kind of connections in Portland, ME. As such, maybe he’ll be kind of enough to hop on down to the locations and sneak a look at what these folks are up to if they indeed pull into the area. And if he does, I’ll be sure to let you know.

“Storm Of The Century”......like the title...
