Trailer Grab Bag! IDENTITY! BIKER BOYZ! NICHOLAS NICKLEBY! SPIDER! GERRY!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

The fine folks over at Apple.com have been posting new trailers like crazy the last few days, and there’s all sorts of stuff to wade through now.

We’ve been getting test screening reports on James Mangold’s IDENTITY for a while now, and they’re decidedly mixed. Some people seem to really dig the sprawling ensemble cast headed by John Cusack and Ray Liotta, as well as the way the film plays with perception, while other people seem to think it’s a long, slow setup for a sucker punch of a twist ending. And, no, it’s not a spoiler to say there’s a twist, since this trailer seems determined to set up that fact for you. In fact, if you’re a keen observer, they give the game away here.

Easily the most entertaining of the new trailers posted is for Doug McGrath’s adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic NICHOLAS NICKELBY, with a remarkably dense cast and a real sense of humor about itself. The word’s been building for a while now that Christopher Plummer is amazing in this one, and the trailer certainly seems to bear that out, but for my money, Broadbent’s going to be the thing that gets my ass in the seat.

BIKER BOYZ looks like one of those films where you can actually hear the executive meeting that took place before it got greenlit. “Hey, did you see FAST & THE FURIOUS and the business it’s doing?” “Yeah.” “Man, we should do something like that... but maybe with motorcycles.” “Ummm... okay. Here’s $40 million. Hurry up.”

The strangest trailer they’ve got over there right now has to be the one that just debuted for the new film from Gus Van Sant. If you didn’t read any of the reviews that came out of Sundance, then basically this is a film about two guys (Matt Damon and Casey Affleck) lost in the desert. Talking. And walking around. And, oddly, it looks quite lovely.

And finally, the trailer that made me cackle with glee was the one for David Cronenberg’s SPIDER, a film I can’t wait to wrap my eyes around. I love Cronenberg. Always have. I talk about his work with my friends all the time. I think he’s one of the great unsung heroes of film, and any time he’s got something new on the way, I’m excited. This script was brilliant, dark and disturbing without ever falling into the trap of being easy “horror.” And the word from festivals and other markets where it’s already played has been very, very strong.
