Hey folks, Harry here. THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE is one of them there new Austin Studio films. You see, Austin, Texas is quickly becoming a Mecca for folks wanting to get the hell out of hell. A. With the recent Austin Studios, there's no reason that ya couldn't shoot LORD OF THE RINGS in Austin... except for those mountains and WETA we had ... oh man, there's no way ya could've shot LORD OF THE RINGS here! Whom I kidding?!?!? HOWEVER, you can shoot THE ALAMO here and Death Row films... You can also shoot Zombie movies here... Yes, You Can! And Musicals. Those Too. All at the Austin Studios!!! Meanwhile, back to THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE.
Personally, I love Alan Parker movies. Ever since I was 5 years old and in love with Tallulah, that's her name boys, in BUGSY MALONE, I've been a fan. When he went from BUGSY MALONE to MIDNIGHT EXPRESS... it summed up his whole career. Breadth. Variety. Alan Parker can make obscure experimental all child cast movies and he can make taut emotionally gut-wrenching films of immense power. He's one of the few directors that has a gifted touch with the Musical genre with his work in BUGSY MALONE, FAME, PINK FLOYD THE WALL, BIRDY (well I consider it a musical), THE COMMITMENTS and EVITA (which I love to death!). His politics often swing towards human rights issues, I'd expect him to take up the subject of the WAR ON TERRORISM prisoners being held indefinitely with no legal representation or trial at some undetermined future date when that story eventually gets told... if it gets told. This time he makes THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE, a film that has the Death Penalty firmly in its sights. Sure to be an unflinching story, here's what one AICN spy thought of the film when they saw it back in August!
Universal has the film slated to be released on February 21st, 2003, but I wonder if there will be a limited NY & LA Oscar Qualifying release or if they plan on releasing a sure-fire Oscar type film in February and hoping for a memory... or if they're just blowing that off altogether. Well, the trailer is wonderful, here ya go...
