Manga Spotlight: Orochi Blood
by Kazuo Umezu
Released by Viz's Pulp division
Released by Viz's Pulp division
In honor of the season, Viz has released a number of collections of new, and classic manga collections, including the third and final volume of Uzumaki (reviews of the first two can be seen here and here), and Blood Last Vampire 2002 (to be released next week).
In the 60's and 70's, manga artist, and some times rock band front man Kazu Umezu was part of the generation of creators who set the tone for the industry with works that ranged from an Ultraman adaptation, made from seeing one episode of the giant super hero's TV show, to a Salvador Dali inspired tale of artists and models.
Orochi: Blood was the sixth and final entry in an anthology of self contained stories linked by mysterious girl named Orochi. In Blood, Orochi is the observer to the relationship between the perfect daughter of a wealthy family, and her less capable sister. It's a Grimm's Fairy Tale take on a more twisted version of "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane," or Hitchcock psycho-suspense. Neither the supernatural or natural thread is as simple as it first looks.
One of the best effects a horror story can hope for is put the viewer in the position of a direct observer, just think of the Blair Witch Project or the Shining's tricycle journey through the Overlook. Orochi Blood's evolving method of putting the reader in the position of the observer is tense, appropriately confusing, and frightening. The first half of the story is a truly strange and spectacular accomplishment, as it simulates watching a muddled observer try to observe follow the development of two complex children. It's spying on a supernatural force spying of foundation of a psychological powder keg. Seeing Umezo depicting this is like marveling at a man summating a mountain you didn't know existed.
Even among manga fans, Kazuo Umezu isn't a name generally known in the US. If Orochi Blood is an indication, he's certainly a master story teller. The timeless qualities of the story and the strength of the illustration make it shockingly fresh for a 25 year old work. Hopefully more of his work will be translated, because he's another standout manga creator to follow attentively.
Anime Preview: Mobile Fighter G Gundam Volume 1
Released by Bandai Entertainment
G Gundam is one of the alternate universe Gundam series, different takes on the giant robot war stories that might appeal to different audiences than the main line's attempt the capture the experience of war changing the young pilots of super advanced weapons.
G-Gundam is the fighting tournament take on the Gundam series, form Giant Robo's Yasuhiro Imagawa. Dragon Ball with strange and colorful giant robots standing in for fire-ball tossing strange and colorful martial artists. The series distinguishes itself with an unparalleled menagerie of giant robots, and a cast of pulp/tall heroes with larger than life personalities and abilities.
In Future Century 60, ethnic space colonies send there best fighters, and combat robots to the ravaged remains of Earth to compete in single combat for the right to lead the colonies for a prescribed period time. The robots, along with their pilots and crew exaggerations of culture of the culture of origin to the point to parody. A Horatio Alger American boxers, a mischievous young Chinese Shaolin priest, a driven young Japanese man with a samurai epic, at its weakest it's the United Nations scene in Austin Powers told with a straight face, at its best, its a round robin of cultural heroes battling it out.
There is a thin line between hovering miles above larger than life silliness. The small details, continual infusion of new material, keeping true to the characters' personalities and shamelessness make the more Doc Savage or Edgar Rice Burroughs pulp, than a typical spastic explosion filled cartoon. Given Yasuhiro Imagawa's track record, he likely deserves the credit for keeping the balance in check.
Gundam fans may dislike the departure from original, and viewers do did not care for the original may enjoy this variations. It doesn't feel as bogged down by angst or tragedy as other Gundam series. Its hyper capable heroes are fully utilizing their abilities to realize personal goals, in the vein of Lupin III or Cowboy Bebop.
The first three volumes of G Gundam will be released on November 5th.
Anime Spotlight: Excel Saga Volume 2
Released By ADV Films
In the anime tree of evolution, Excel Saga is the furthest leaf on the budding insane comedy branch. Here's one that looks over the "going there" chasm, and leaps in with abandon.
Spastic would-be city conquering agent Excel, and her anemic, blood coughing partner Hyatt are given a genre parodying missions, which tend to intersect with threads of the lives of other characters/groups, ranging from Mechi the emergency food supply dog, to Nabeshin, the shows director and ubiquitous man of action, to the great enabler Spirit of the Universe. Despite being a dyed-in-the-wool plotless comedy it manages to field some characters with a touch of dramatic weight, and some interesting story evolution.
After the blinding energy of the first volume, the first two of the second volume's four episodes are mostly a let down. Despite some good moments, they skirt sitcom levels of goofiness. Excel Saga is propelled by shock. When it is safe, simple, or repetitive, it falls very flat. If the supporting humor in an episode is a replay of Menchi fleeing a ravenous Excel into the arms of a gruff but sensitive soldier, or a return of the vicious skirt wearing Pokemon-esque teddy bears, the episode isn't going to rise to the expectation for the series.
The later two episodes are studies in what works by putting on a parade of the unexpected, either through rapid fire, inspired oddity, or a savage flirtations with cruelty (finding new to combine sugary cuteness with heartless evil, or the ending twists in the path of Pedro as he tries to return home to his wife, but ends up in bed with the Spirit of the Universe, or channeled by a witch doctor). When it hits its marks, nothing can compare to its stream of inspired insanity. The best example in this volume is the fourth episode in the release, which is sort of a bowling Shaolin Soccer.
Excel Saga is guaranteed to catch you off guard. While the first two episodes are amusing, they aren't the caliber to catch the attention of people who aren't traditionally fans of anime humor. The third has a number of inspired moments, but parodies a genre that isn't particularly prominent in western eyes, but the final episode is a gem.

Robinson told Daily Variety that he came to the project after Norrington had been developing the idea with Warners execs Lionel Wigram and Dan Lin, but had yet to find a take they liked.
"I've been a fan of the anime for many years and
understood which elements would have to be brought to a
live-action translation of it," Robinson told Daily
Variety. "I've tried to retain as many iconic elements
of the anime as possible."

The first volume of Virus will be released of November 26th.
From Manga Video's description of Virus: Manga presents a gripping 13-episode sci-fi action epic that combines the intelligence and cybernetic vision of Ghost in the Shell with the complex character development and furious mecha combat of the groundbreaking Neon Genesis Evangelion series. Virus is the latest work of veteran anime director, character designer and fan-favorite Masami Obari (Battle Arena Toshinden, and Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture). Originally aired from October to December of 1997 on Japan's TV Tokyo, Virus received a substantial share of its target Television audience. Perhaps because of its popularity, the similarity between this series and Universal Pictures' 1999 feature film of the same name has led many to speculate that the later film, in which an electronic alien life-form takes over a research spacecraft and plots to wipe out humanity by means of an infectious machine-taking-over virus, was in part based upon the anime series. Neo Hong Kong, 2097: The world has changed. Advances in genetic engineering and cybernetics have created an environment full of artificially enhanced humans and intelligent super-computers that operate using biological software. But the same technology that has allowed man & machine to merge has made both susceptible to a new kind of threat - digital viruses capable of controlling their hosts.
The last line of defense against this insidious foe is an elite task force known as STAND. Equipped with state-of-the-art armored cybernetic suits known as "variable gears," only this special law-enforcement arm can deal with virus-infected war machines on their own terms.
