Al Bundy himself, Ed O’Neill, has been called in as a last-minute replacement for the much-younger Danny Huston on ABC’s 2003 version of “Dragnet,” according to Monday’s edition of The Hollywood Reporter.
Pairing an older Joe Friday with a younger Frank Smith (still played in this version by “Freakylinks”/”Vegas Vacation” star Ethan Embry) brings the show even closer to being a clone of “Law & Order.” (Dick Wolf is the mastermind behind both “L&O” and “Dragnet”).
Does anybody remember that O’Neill, in his pre-“Married With Children” days, was cast as Popeye Doyle in a proposed series based on the dogged “French Connection” detective? Weird, man.
Even weirder: when Ethan Embry was just a tot, he and Ed O'Neill were the co-leads in the "Home Alone"-era John Hughes road buddy comedy "Dutch."
