Hey folks, Harry here with that oh so hot Debutante from the big Apple, she's got a solid core in her and she loves watching da movies. Here she lavishes GREAT PRAISE upon Spike Lee's latest and from the other reviews we've seen... that seems very apt. I love inhaling each and everyone of Spike Lee's unrolled Joints... Here ya go...
A big Hey to Harry and the whole crew. This is infamous Manhattan debutante Edith Bouvier Beale, Jr., who recently snuck you guys notes on The Hours (perfection) and Red Dragon (poo).
I know you guys already put up reviews of THE 25TH HOUR, but I was there last night too (along with Mr. Spike, Barry Pepper and Philip Seymour Hoffman... who brought his mother!! What a good son!!). I just wanted to offer my admiration...
This movie is SEXCELLENT. I loved it. I originally wanted to go, because I'd heard Oscar buzz for Ed Norton. Well, no. I don't think he'll get nominated for shit, but he's AMAZING. To back up: Ed Norton is going to jail for seven years on drug charges. The movie follows how he spends his last day of freedom, which includes seeing his two best friends since childhood (smarmy stockbroker Barry Pepper and shlumpy teacher Philip Seymour Hoffman), making peace with his dad (the wonderful Brian Cox) and acting shifty around his ex-stripper girlfriend, NATURELLE RIVERA (one of the all time great movie names, as played by Rosario Dawson).
I mean, that's what it's about but that's not what it's ABOUT. It's really about life in New York City after September 11th. I haven't yet seen something deal with this issue so well. It's almost beautiful how Spike handles it. He uses it as background. It's been woven into the tapestry of New York, and that's how he treats it, as part of the background his characters operate against. I dunno who did the music, but it's flawless.
OK That's all. It comes out this Christmas. Everyone should really see it. It's a really gripping moral drama, with great performances (I didn't even mention Anna Paquin, cuz that would take up like five pages of me talking about her awesome/retarded face). Norton, Pepper, Hoffman and Dawson have genuine chemistry. It's very cool.
I happen to think that this is Spike's best since DO THE RIGHT THING, and I would hope that it would be remembered for awards, but I seriously doubt it.
Shake it in the rain,
EDIE :-)
PS-- I'm off to About Schmidt tonight at the NYFF. Jealous? Tee hee. I'll let you know.
