Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
Lots of Chuck Palahniuk news rolling in lately, and as always, Dennis is right there with his ear to the ground. Here’s a pretty comprehensive update on all things related to the author of the blistering, eerie new LULLABY, a book that has stuck with me for the whole five months since I read it. It’s powerful stuff. Let’s see what else he’s up to...
Dennis of ChuckPalahniuk.net here. Lots of new things to report in the Palahniuk world, both book and movie related. So let me just get right into it.
- There are a few petitions on our website right now that fans of AICN should no about. The first is a petition to save the FIGHT CLUB Special Edition DVD from the evil clutches of 20th Century Fox. It seems, in a latest move to cut costs, Fox will soon be pulling all remaining copies of the amazing DVD off the shelves in favor of the boring, horrible, single disk of the movie that was first released. (you remember: the one with Pitt and Norton on the cover and that superimposed hand holding up the soap bar.)
If you'd like to show your support for Fincher and the amazing work he did, help keep this DVD exactly where it belongs: in stores. Go here and sign the petition to save the FIGHT CLUB Special Edition DVD:
- Next up is another petition. This one is to save the SURVIVOR movie from the ashes of post-9/11 censorship that is slowly taking over Hollywood. As any of you Palahniuk fans may know, SURVIVOR is Chuck's second novel (right after Fight Club) and in many fans opinions, his best novel. Long ago, Jake Paltrow (brother of Gwen) wrote a very good screenplay for the book which caught the attention of 20th Century Fox (who still owned the movie rights at the time). Then people started paying attention. Trent Reznor signed on to do the score for the film. Names like Danny Boyle and Sam Mendes began circling the directing chair. And even actors like Madonna and Nicole Kidman took an interest in the lead role of Fertility Hollis.
And then two planes flew into the World Trade Center and all interest in making a big budget Hollywood film where the lead character has hijacked an airplane which he plans to fly into the Australian outback... well, let's just say that was a great big, "no, no."
Well, I should hope that time heals our wounds. And if lame terrorist films like "Collateral Damage" are now allowed to be released, I should hope that an intelligent, satirical, masterpiece like Chuck Palahniuk's SURVIVOR would finally be allowed to see the light of day. So if you'd like to show your support in getting this film back into development, let 20th Century Fox know how you feel and sign the "Save Chuck Palahniuk's Survivor" petition here:
- Next up, I want to give a brief summary of Chuck's next book, entitled "A Period Revival." For any of you that felt you didn't get the proper dose of horror that "Lullaby" supposedly promised, well, "Revival" appears to be the real deal. It will be the first book in a trilogy of novels dealing in the horror genre. While we know that a major part of the book deals with the ghost of a serial killer, here's the official word on it:
"Bestselling author Chuck Palahniuk (whose CHOKE is just out as an Anchor paperback) has just signed a new two-book deal with Gerry Howard, his Doubleday editor. It was a North American rights deal, signed with agent Edward Hibbert at Donadio & Olson, calling for the first of the pair, PERIOD REVIVAL, to be published in fall 2003. This takes the form of a fictional diary kept by a woman whose architect husband has tried to kill himself; she discovers he has left behind a series of notes in homes he has been remodeling, offering ever more disturbing revelations about his life and marriage. Howard says that though the book contains Palahniuk's trademark 'outrageous black humor,' it also represents a new direction in its poignant first-person narration by a female protagonist. Still awaited from Palahniuk's previous contract is a book of essays and reportage, STRANGER THAN FICTION, due in summer 2004."
- Last thing I'll mention is the amazing ChuckPalahniuk.net Tshirt Raffle still going on at our website. SIX GRAND PRIZE WINNERS WILL HAVE CHARACTERS NAMED AFTER THEM IN CHUCK'S NEXT BOOK ("A Period Revival"). As the buzz builds and our raffle nears its end (Ocober 25th deadline) Chuck has finished the first draft of "Revival" and recently informed Jeff Walsh of OASIS magazine of the following, newest development in the raffle:
"Actually, you may not be killed. You may actually be a killer. You can be any one of the primary characters. The book is about our need to make a lasting impression on the culture, our need to put our name on history, leave our name behind in some tangible way, so it seemed perfect to use people's names in the book and make them well-known that way."
If you'd like to learn more about the raffle and even enter it to have a chance of having your FULL NAME immortalized in a Chuck Palahniuk novel, go here and learn more:
That's all for now. Until next time, enjoy your fights!
