Besides you'll have a chance to see THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS on the big screen and anytime that happens... Pry your ass up and motivate it to the theater in question!
Hey, Harry. Capone in Chicago here with a word or two about a film festival in the Illinois capital of Springfield that promises to be something special. Let me give you a few highlights about a little something called the Route 66 Film Festival.
According the the festival web site (Route66FilmFestival.Com), the “metaphorical theme” of the event is “Journey.” Should we expect to hear Steve Perry wailing? We can only hope. But I think that what the fest will focus on is films about people beginning, making, or ending a journey. There’s a Kick-off Weekend, September 21 and 22 at the Springfield Center for the Arts (go to the site for screening listings, prices, and the address of the theatre). The weekend includes “Bruce Campbell Day” on Sunday, Sept. 22., which includes a book signing of his autobiography at a nearby bookstore and screenings of Bruce’s films RUNNING TIME (1997) and ESCAPE FROM L.A., both at the Route 66 Drive-In (see the site for the address).
The official festival runs from September 26 to 29 at The Esquire Theater in Springfield (again, check the site for the full schedule, showtimes, and prices). Highlights include:
FIGHTER--A documentary about Jan Wierner who escaped the Nazis, flew for the Royal Air Force, and was imprisoned by the communists as a spy.
DAUGHTER FROM DANANG--winner for Best Documentary at Sundance this year.
THE LAST WALTZ--The remastered concert film classic by Martin Scorsese chronicling The Band’s final performance.
ABERDEEN--The rarely seen 2000 feature staring Ian Hart, Stellan Skarsgard, and Lena Headey.
JACKIE BROWN--With Robert Forster in attendance for a panel discussion preceding the film.
THE INDEPENDENT--with Jerry Stiller.
KWIK STOP--Which played the festival circuit a whole lot in 2001.
THE STENDAHL SYNDROME--Asia Argento in her father Dario’s 2000 feature.
ALLIGATOR--Written by John Sayles and starring Robert Forster.
U-TURN--Directed by Oliver Stone .
THE FAST RUNNER--The Inuit masterpiece. Go out of your way to see this one.
DIAMOND MEN--Again with Robert Forster, along with Donnie Wahlberg.
SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS--with Tony Curtis, Martin Milner, and Burt Lancaster. Followed by a panel discussion with Martin Milner.
Remember, the theme is “Journey.” Okay, some of these films might seem like a stretch, but the line-up of films and guests is pretty great. Hitch your thumb out and make your way to Springfield everybody.
