This just into Geek Headquarters in Austin, Texas' hill country. Father Geek here posting an early look at what promises to be an unusal and fun film going experience...
G'day mates,
Max here from Melbourne, Australia. I just saw a preview of Alex Proyas' latest low-budget flick 'Garage Days'. Released through the Fox 'SearchLight's indie imprint.
I must say, Garage Days is HEAPS better than Moulin Rouge. From the get-go Proyas means business as the film pops open with the great power-chordage of AC/Dc's 'Long way to the top'. The spunky cast lead by carrot-headed Kick Gurry, the punky spunks Pia Maranda and Maya Stange and the loopy Brett Stiller have fun as they rock through this reasonably light-weight romp. Basically 'Garage Days' revolves around our protags quest to get a gig for their fledgling indie-punk band. There are moments of true hilarity, and Proyas' gothic style oozes throughout. In fact there are some GREAT visual moments, including a cool scene in a bath...
Proyas' has filmed it in Sydney, and his use of locations is miraculous, converting the urban-reality grunge of inner-Sydney into his own edgy Proyas' world. That's all good and well, but the script, despite having some great comic moments, tends to get a bit episodic and flag at Proyas' wild visual energy. Think of 'Josie and the Pussy Cats' meets the goth-rock look of 'the crow' and you might be getting close. It will be interesting to see how this film goes, though it could find a good goth-indie cult audience.
The weather's really picked up down here!
All the best,
Max Rockatanski of Melbourne, Australia
