All Sorts Of Cool Trailers!! ANIMATRIX!! AUTO FOCUS!! INTERVIEW WITH THE ASSASSIN!! MORE!!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Holy crap. I can’t believe how much cool stuff there is to share tonight. I’ve got something like 20 articles in the pipeline to post, plus I’m writing my DOORS article, my RUMBLINGS, and my DVD column. I need to just get to it.

First up today is a trailer that I was steered towards by a mysterious e-mail, someone who is either trying to fool me or who has already been fooled:

What do you know about this movie?! Documentary or not?!

That was a pretty goddamn effective question when Artisan built the entire pre-release hype on BLAIR WITCH PROJECT around it, and I know that a friend of mine called me tonight three times to talk about this trailer. The third time, I was actually in the bathroom, but he was so excited he played me the trailer over the phone. At first, he wasn’t sure what he was looking at, and this is a really savvy viewer, too. He called me back one last time, though, when he realized it was Raymond J. Barry he was looking at, a veteran character actor from films like DEAD MAN WALKING and BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY. Magnolia Pictures obviously isn’t selling this as a documentary, but I’m sure a little confusion wouldn’t upset anyone if it got people talking, eh?

I get a lot of silly e-mail every day about THE MATRIX, people who are just bored and itchy and desperate for new information, and I understand. Fans are practically foaming at the mouth at the prospect of all the MATRIXy goodness that’s theirs in 2003. I know I’ve been sent that link to the fake MATRIX 2 script over and over now. For the most part, I flip quickly through those e-mails, but for the last two days, I’ve been getting bombarded with people steering me towards something that seems to be leaving them speechless...

Wow!! How’s your ass?! Mine’s severely and completely rocked!!

In all seriousness, that’s great stuff, and Square looks to have made something far more visually interesting than last year’s dull FINAL FANTASY. I can’t wait to see all the various takes on the world the Wachowskis created. Takes balls to let other people play around in your franchise like this. Warner Bros. knows what they’re doing so far where this property is concerned, and this trailer only further confirms that fact.

There’s some other trailers you might want a quick look at, like AUTO FOCUS, a film I dig the more I think about it. I really think Kinnear stepped up to a different level here, and the trailer does a great job of showing you how tricky the tone of the piece is, and how well Schrader has pulled it off:

Then there’s one of the two big Oscar hopefuls that Paramount/Miramax are releasing this year. This is the first footage I’ve seen from Stephen Daldry’s THE HOURS, and it’s an ambitious and interesting glimpse at one of the hardest sells I’ve ever seen. It’s a pretty literary concept, and I’m not sure the audience will know what to make of the DALLOWAY references or that they’ll know who Virginia Woolf is. Still... I’m interested. And check out the nose on Kidman! Holy cow!

Or try what looks like this year’s answer to GOSFORD PARK, filled with French femmes extraordinaire... 8 WOMEN, from Universal’s art-house arm, Focus Films:

The fall is basically here. Great time of year. This one should be very, very interesting...

"Moriarty" out.
