Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
Never heard of it, but now I’m curious. Here’s The Lost Boy to tell you why...
Hi Harry.
I haven't written to you before but thought this might interest you. On Saturday night I attended a screening of My Little Eye at the Edinburgh Film Festival. A quick aside before I go into that.. while awaiting the arrival of my friends the stars of The Guru arrived for the Premier of that.. man Heather Graham is a babe!
Anyways...! Once everyone had got into their seats we were greated by Shane Danielsen the artistic director for the festival who briefly introduced us to the Director Marc Evans, saying that we were about to be scared out our seats and that there would be a short Q&A at the end of the film so to stick around.
My Little Eye is based around a similar premise to the TV show Big Brother, during the Q&A Marc Evans revealed that they had starting planning the movie upon first hearing of Big Brother so none of it is based on them actually viewing the series. A group of teenagers apply to be part of an internet show where they have to live in a house in the middle of nowhere, broadcast 24x7 on the net with a prize of $1 million. The only conditions being that they must all stay till the end of the 6 months and must all stay indoors during nightfall.
The entire movie was filmed on fixed webcams using multiple cams to film each scene and then cut on a Mac, as Marc said, one of the most satisifying things for him was the whole thing was created on equipment you could buy in your local store. This along with the fact the house looks like something from Amityville gives the whole setting a creepy, claustrophibic feel.
We join the group after the six months are nearly up and very little has happened to them to this point, then in the last few days.. all hell breaks lose! I don't wanna ruin the plot as I hate spoilers, but the basic idea is that all is not as it seems, they start recieving weird packages and messages, digging into their various sordid pasts, driving them to breaking point. Then.. the start to die... in graphic and horrible detail in some cases.. this ain't for the fainthearted!
The film drives along well, is well acted and in particular the atmosphere is amazing. One of the main things is the weird soundtrack which is largely white noise, modem crackle, dialling tones, phones beeping which constantly reminds you of the online theme which Evans revealed had been mixed and produced by the same guys responsible for the Aliens series and other films of that genre. The whole thing plays out beautifully with only one or two minor annoyances to anyone with the faintest idea about the internet but ignore that and you're in for a wild and unusual story, as Evans himself said, its an experiment in horror and it works out almost to perfection. I think it'll come out on general release as its backed by Universal.. and if it does.. go see it, its worth it!
Wednesday night I'm attending The Suprise Movie.. if its anything interesting.. I'll let ya know.
Hope my ramblings are worth a read.. you can call me The Lost Boy.
