Asim Big takes a gander at Michael Caine in THE ACTORS!

Hey folks, Harry here with a film I didn't know diddlysquat about. Sounds like a fun little movie, again produced in England. Hopefully we'll be able to get a screening of this in Austin while Michael Caine is here shooting SECONDHAND LIONS! That'd be a blast!

Harry my good man,

Took in a preview showing of a new Irish film 'The Actors' staring Michael Caine and Dylan Moran. The director was there (Conor McPherson ) and he explained that the music was an assortment of pieces from other films because that the score was not finished yet.

A brief synopsis is this: Michael Caine is an old time stage actor playing Richard III in Ireland in an old theatre for hardly any money. He dreams of retiring and living in luxury. His companion and bit part player in Richard III is Dylan Moran (a fantastic Irish comedy actor who you guys have probably never heard of). Caine informs Moran that he has run in with some Irish gangsters and found out that they owe a large some of money to someone they have never met. Caine suggests that Moran impersonate the unknown gangster and get the money owed and Caine can retire in luxury.

I enjoyed this film a great deal. The slightly ridiculous plot forgotten (it gets a lot more complicated than explained) it does actually manage to be heartfelt / witty at the same time. The performances are of the greatest note as a lot of character changes take place. Dylan Moran proves that he can go further than stand up comedy and Michael Caine is just good old Michael Caine. Perhaps the most important thing about it is it did make me laugh a lot, which is something I wasn't expecting it to do. It just goes to show that we can still produce good low budget British comedies that work and hopefully more films like this will be made.
